Hi Sue,
Correction to the calendar. The Hunter Valley Traditional Archers "Gathering" is to be held in its usual spot over the June long weekend 6th and 7th with camping commencing Thursday 4th through to 8th.
HVTA are an independent club. Fully Traditional bows and wooden arrows. No card is required as we have our own insurance.
Cheers Towball

I have been advised the Gladstone Longbow and Recurve Muster is not going to be held this year (May 2/3), basically they have not been attracting the numbers to make it worthwhile for the amount of time, energy required to set it up. No indication, at this stage of future years. I shall remove the shoot from the calendar.

I have not missed a Gladstone shoot since I started Archery. Numbers have been down the last 2 or 3 years. It has always been a great shoot, will miss it.

Hi Eddie,

Dwindling attendance at traditional shoots appears to have started a few years back.

I have attended many traditional shoots over the last twenty years or so and a lot of archers attending those shoots were around my age.

I am on the wrong side of seventy and health issues have curtailed a lot of my archery activities. Perhaps the older archers are finding themselves in a similar situation.

Some other points that may be relevant;

The financial climate and the need to control household debt.

A lack of interest in traditional archery by the younger generation.

Is there reluctance by archers to buy additional gear to comply with equipment guidelines? Inconsistent equipment rules and bow category definitions.

Are there any other thoughts as to why numbers attending traditional shoots is on the decline?

here is some of the reasons various clubs no longer hold trad shoots:
too much effort for very little outcome - bad weather keeping attendance low, so club interested wained - rule changes to make more inclusive, had the reverse effect - club support of the Trad archers had adverse outcomes - and I could go on, however that isn't going to benefit the clubs that are still holding good trad shoots.

Anyhooo I have a new calendar with the latest updates which includes 2 TAA club shoots - Mossman North Qld May 22 to 24 and Maydaan Dec date to be confirmed.

cheers

Thanks Sue,
Just to save confusion in amongst all the COVID-19 shuffling and cancellation of events.
At this stage the HVTA Gathering is still on the calendar for June.
It is the Andy Firth Memorial Shoot at the end of March that has been cancelled.
We all need to follow government protocols at the moment, but more importantly be sensible and look after each other.
If that means we can't attend shoots for a while then so be it.
Cheers for now,
Towball

2020 - not a great year for any archery I'm afraid. :(
