The weather was really warming up as we headed into the October long weekend with predictions for temps in the very high 30’s until to Saturday. The strong westerly winds were certainly going to test us, as we set up the gazebos’ for shade over the practice butts and speed round at Chevallan Archery Park for the combined Trad Shoot and Trophy Takers Awards Presentation being held Sept 30 to Oct 2.
Some Trophy Takers members arrived on Friday having set out from Victoria a couple of days earlier. Once they made camp they started to set up the game displays in the shed, where shelves and tables had been installed for them to utilise. A tepee was erected near the Trophy Taker members’ camp, and was standing proudly, until a willy willy danced up the paddock and gracefully flattened it. By Friday evening there were quite a few campsites setup with many arriving late into the evening. They were coming in from Townsville, Rockhampton, Central NSW coast, southern NSW and even flying in from Greece, and the displays were growing with each new arrival bringing their individual mounts. The displays in the shed display were really beginning to take shape.
Saturday morning dawn bright and soon started warming up. A quick rundown of the events at Muster and off we went with 2 full days of archery ahead of us. We started on the rolling disk and the arrow fletches were definitely being tested to keep the arrows on course to the targets on 30 sec speed round with the western winds blowing in all this warm weather.
Next was the Popinjay, and using flu flus’ I was struggling to get the arrows anywhere near the “owl” I was looking at. Somehow I do not think I was the only one. After shooting the clout, we stopped at the house for morning tea then ventured down to the field course.
We had set up the tea tent down the bottom, with the guests quite happy sitting in the shade enjoying the view back up the property to camping area and house. The 60 sec Hunt round and the new Hunter Round although out in the open and affected by the wind gusts. It was getting very very warm, so we headed back to get out of the heat and have some lunch. We can do the moving target later.
At this shoot we will be doing the Top 10 Shootout. This event is sponsored by Wes and Kaylene Farnham @realty, with the winner receiving a set of handcrafted custom made Wallace Wood arrows in Chevallan Archery Park colours. The archers are selected by their 25 target field course score and is held on the 30 sec speed round where you must shoot an arrow into the metal ring before you can proceed onto the other targets. Those watching were enjoying spring rolls, cheese, crackers and cabanossi under the gazebo. Two of the archers went into a 2nd round shoot-off, with the winner by one arrow being Shane Dupille, one of the Trophy Taker members.
Shoot-off run, and the AFL grand final over it was time for dinner, then most went over to the big shed to watch the Trophy Taker Awards Presentation. There had been quite a few Bowhunters in over the course of the afternoon to attend the award ceremony and joined us for dinner. It was a very interesting and informative evening, speaking with all the members who were more than happy to answer questions and sharing the stories of the different feral game species that are found and dispatched, and the areas each species can be found both here in Australia and overseas.
Sunday shooting was going to be more comfortable as it had cooled off quite a bit overnight, thank goodness, as we had the whole day to do everything once more. A few of the local archers also joined us for the day, having worked yesterday. It was a gentler northerly wind so when at the clout you shot directly into the wind down range, and were wind assisted when shooting back. The field course was still out of the breeze were protected. 3 of us in our group shot recurves on Saturday, then longbows on Sunday to mix it up a bit.
The presentations were done late Sunday afternoon to allow some who were leaving early the chance to watch. We did a special one for the cubs a little earlier in the afternoon as the parents wanted to get them home, for back to school Tuesday. A short while after we enjoyed dinner and dessert, then most settled back to watch the NRL grand final on the big screen set up outside, while others wandered back to camp to enjoy the cool of the evening. There has been very little rain in the area for quite a while and sound of drizzle on the tarp overnight was a relief. This was a most successful and enjoyable weekend once again. It was an honour to host the 31st Trophy Takers Awards evening.
For next year, starting at the October long weekend and going through into the following weekend we are hoping to able to incorporate some shooting with bow making, arrow making, Flemish string making and other aspects of Traditional archery. How exciting, an entire week of Trad.
We are looking forward to our next event coming up Oct 21/22 being the 4th Selfbow Workshop conducted by Perry Jackson. Some of us will be camping on the Saturday for a mini shoot over the weekend as well. cheers.
