Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
Started to make my forge today.
I have an existing outdoor fireplace, so after looking on the net at different ideas, I have come up with a slip in type forge that I can take in and out of the fire place.
Used an old roasting tray to make a base for my forge. Fitted in a pipe for an air supply, then added some fire blanket and some refactory cement based mortar and shaped it to make a bowl.

Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
I left the tray overnight to "bake" on the coals of last nights fire.
I then set it up ready to go, just have to organise a blower and some charcoal. I will get some coke next week when I go the Blacksmith forge (Australian Blacksmith Association vic.) where my son and I have joined as members.

Wherever you go......there you are!
Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
I am going to the Smithy tomorrow with my son, I will get some coke and I should have it up and running in a day or two, which is just as well, as I have some knives I want to harden and temper. Just working out a blower as well.
Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
BBQ shops sell hardwood charcoal which works very well and does not need as much blast to use.Just a thought..

Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
Hi Guy's
I fired up my forge today. I am quite happy with it, but I am going to make a new tray in the near future with a full 2" air feed tube. I am using a 1" one at the moment and I don't think it quite lets enough air thru. I bought the exhaust fan from Masters today
It will be fine for arrow heads and Knives, bigger projects will need more air. All in all it's a little ripper! Best thing of all is that as I write this I am sitting in front of my open fire, which an hour ago was my forge! I just slipped out the tray when I was finished and made my log fire.
This keeps the Minister for war and finance happy as well...........

Before you give up on the set up you have already try charcoal like I said it works with a lot less blast.

Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
Now I REALLY want an Anvil!!!!!!
Re: Home made Coal/Charcoal forge........
The Folks that produced this DVD use a section of Rail Line set in a Bucket of Concrete as an Anvil. Their DVD's are excellent by the way. There is another Fella that works with Tim and Marion Lively , Tai Goo that has an excellent DVD on Bladesmithing as well
