World Masters Games Target

#1 Post by longbowinfected » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:33 am

yes I do realise that this is not strictly trad but I will report on those using trad equipment in a high tech world.....

One of my wife's friends commented last night that the eason the World Masters Medalswere so big was because of old burgers and their failing/ailing eyesight.

going to be difficult today........shooting the long distance components 60 metres and 50 metres in the afternoon on a day when the morning is so windy. At least after all the long distance teenie weanie IFAA targets yesterday the FITA monster targets will be visible.

Could be worse........the wife is quite happy kicking me out of the house and i am on hollidays...hard day at the not office.....when the week is done I think I wil relax by shooting trad arrows at Wiseman's

55 - 60 kph winds multi directional, predominantly cross wind.
The wind blew over a target butt and killed three arrows belonging to an overseas visitor...ouch.

60 and 50 metre targets......... slow medium paced swing archery [no car key swapping]
Boy I am glad that I am solid and built low to the ground.
The bloke next to me downwind of me on the next target pleaded with me to stay on the line till he finished shooting. When I turned up he seemed really happy and friendly .I did not want to upset my new friend.
So I thought I was doing something wrong. In any case I was taking at least 50 seconds out of the allocated 4 minutes to shoot my 6 arrows. I could not see how I could be really doing anything wrong until slow old me realised that because he was such a little skinny guy that I must have been a really efficient wind break.
For some daft reason unclear to me I enjoy windy and/or wet conditions more and only shoot 10% worse than in good conditions...perhaps because it is often wet, windy and cold in the upper Blue Mountains where I shoot.
Indications at halfway point for target
Longbow
30-39 Steve Farrell [what wind?] followed by Matt Allison
40-49 tough close tussle between Andy Firth and Craig Williams
50-59 Ian Stokes 370 ish, Kevin Girard 331, Garry Cocks 321 [yet another day spent where these two are less than a dozen points apart] Garry does not like wind, guess which little black duck is praying for rain and wind??????? ChrisBinyon is in touch
60-69 Bob Sheehan has Robert Keenan from Tuggeranong at arm's length after letting me beat him at the first distance got all fired up
70 our Mexican visitor shooting his 65# bow may not speak much English but he is a character
him and his fellow competitor from adelaide that nursery of longbow are great 'compadres'
Our mexican friend pointed out that where he comes from "x" is called an "accident"
Apologies for any errors / ommissions

some of the barebow recurvers and compounders are stil being beaten by the longbowers....
do not get the chance to say that three days in a row....thanks for the memories boys

Gee i hope it is windy tomorrow but not windy enough to call off.

Morning Steve

Photos - that is what we want to see. And I note it is a Canon he is using. Both Jeff and I are pleased. :D

Morning Kevin

I don't mind the wind so much when compared to the rain - standing all day in the rain shooting arrows is not my idea of fun plus the feathers really do not like it. ( I sneaked in a few arrows yesterday morning - under cover for them and it was really nice. Sure beat that 35C temp outside. )

Seems like the event is running okay. Really busy at the Baseball and Sofball.

Interesting comment about the target falling over - Ouch. I have a feeling that has happened before at that venue.

Thanks Steve,
You were right, my gut looks horrendous in that shot. Still I haven't noted any six packs amongst the longbow fraternity.

Steady on Andy. Looks can be deceiving.
I have half a dozen six packs shoved into a 60 litre esky under my archery shirt.

Weather today
Very windy in the morning for the bare bowers, a bit worse than yesterday....60 kph??
The afternoon shift [sighted compound and recurve] did start out with early dark skies, rain and a short period of higher wind peaks judging from the angle / whip in the air sock posts one biggie at 70kph?? but settled down to better than our afternoon shift yesterday or morning shift today.

Lovely sunny but coolish day as soon as the shot finished and the presentation finished. At the last distance 30m this morning Mick Turner from ACT Tuggeranong shot a likely Australian record for the shoot and various distance components.

Longbow
I shocked myself shot a 230 PB [PB by 30 points in high wind] at 30 metres to reverse a 40 point deficet and grab/burgle 50-59 target silver by 1 point from my sparring partner Garry Cocks and I have to say that was 100 points better than my 40m. The recovery/fightback will be my personal highlight for these games. Robert Keenan won a 70+ Gold with his last couple of arrows.
Many of the longbowers Farrell, Stokes, Allison, Wlliiams and Firth shot past the 200 mark and shot better 30 m scores than all but a few of the compounders and recurvers shooting in the morning.

A number of really close competitive tussles. A good but hard day at the office.
Longbow
Men 30-39 Steve Farrel [was it windy? i could not see it] 906/1440 Gold; Matt Allison Silver 694/1440
Men 40-49 Craig Williams 698 /1440 Gold; Andrew Firth 695/1440 Silver GREAT TUSSLE; Simon Hitchin 467/1440 Bronze
Men 50-59 Ian Stokes [Wind???] 792/1440 Gold; Kevin Girard 692/1440 Silver; Garry Cocks 691/1440 Bronze better luck next time Garry
Men 60-69 Bob Sheehan 776/1440 Gold
Men 70 Robert Keenan 432/1440 Gold; David Onslow 426/1440 Silver; Barry Adams 419/1440 WONDERFUL THREE way TUSSLE

Women
40-49 Regina Bohler 295/1440 Gold
50-59 Lynda Strawbridge 268/1440 Gold

A very tired and happy Kevin

Morning Kevin and Crew.

Great reporting. I expect to see more photos from Steve later today. :D

Good to here that all went well with Longbowers and you survived the gentle breezes of Sydney and well done on the Silver. That should be good for a weekend pass. :D

Thanks for the reporting.

I had the pleasure (I think) of meeting Gary Cocks at the Sydney Bowmen Club. I shot and chatted with him at the 30 metre range. His shooting was impressive and he was a champion to talk with. (I'm new to trad bows and returning to archery after a 17 year break.)

One piece of wisdom from him, after I complained about my badly tuned bow's twang (brace height fixed now) "Don't worry about the noise as long as your arrows are going where you want them to".

Great bloke and his wife was lovely. Hope he placed well and had fun.
Common sense; so rare it should be considered a superpower.
