City of Sydney shoot

#1 Post by longbowinfected » Mon Dec 08, 2008 12:27 pm

This is one of the oldest ASNSW continuous shoots in NSW run by the oldest ASNSW continuous club, Sydney Bowmen.
It marks the end of the ASNSW shooting calendar.
This shoot is a link between archery today and the times before the rise of the rampant compound bow.
I guess originally most shooters would have used flatbows then......well the longbows are making a comeback at this shoot which has actively encouraged and allowed the use of timber arrows as a novelty but serious shoot...the longbowers appreciate it and are actively supporting it.
Nominally target shooters male/female/juniors compete against each other in separate divisions....in divisions of recurve or compound. There is only one combined division for longbow...even kids have to shoot adult distances which they ordinarily would not have to do.
It is all set up at Coogee way and it is very well prepared, presented and run.
It is always a fun day but brother it is always a tough day.
Sighted bows shoot two rounds of 30 arrows at distances of 60m, 50m, 40m for a total of 180 arrows
Longbows shooting aluminium arrows shoot two rounds of 30 arrows at distances of 60m, 50m, 40m for a total of 180 arrows.
Longbows shooting wooden arrows compete agains the archers shooting with aluminium arrows but at a discounted set of distances of 50m, 40m, 30m for a total of 180 arrows.
Of the 50 odd competitors there wer about 12 longbowers and 4 barebow recurvers plus 1 Yumi bow....almost a third of the competitors. This number of traditional style shooters is increasing. A small number of regular longbowers did not attend. A number of archers have just recently ordered custom made longbows so the numbers are going to increase next year. It is really pleasing to see newcomers taking on and enjoying this physically challenging shoot [we calculate that you walk between 5-6 kilometres and pull 2.5 tons in draw weight over the day as well as dragging 200 arrows out of the odd tough target butt.

The day was long, the company great and the weather ranged from bleak, overcast and windy to extremely hot and windy......did I mention that it was very windy in Sydney again?

Steve Farrell [Longbowsteve] from Mountain Archers shooting aluminium arrows shot a tad over 1300 [out of 1800], bettering his awesome mark of 1177 the previous year in much worse shooting conditions this year. Andy from Sydney Bowmen topped the wooden arrow brigade followed closely by the young but hobbling veteran Mike Fouracre from Sydney Bowmen [that will teach you for winning your placing certificate back from me...it is only a loaner mate...do not stick it on the wall] them LBI [personal best not too shabby near to 1150] followed by Duncan Fairweather and a host of others hot on their heels.
Regina put in a sterling effort as did my daughter Jessica, aged 12, shooting timber arrows at 50 metres using a 22# BOW INTO A HEADWIND.
The second round saw on the butt I was shooting at four longbow archers shooting low 550's to high 580's for 90 arrows....we were all chasing second and third place using timbers together...we were flogging each other red for red, gold for gold..the wicked thoughts and comments alone were of Olympic proportions "nice shot that....[bast..d]"
Whilst Steve's effort was fantastic [he murdered a number of sighted archer's scores] the feature of the day was undoubtedly Chris McGuirk fully kitted out as a Japanese warrior in meditation shooting a humungously long 22# Yumi bow using 3 foot long [if not longer] telegraph pole arrows with 6 inch flights.
I took some short videoclips which I hope to make available as soon as I read the instructions.

We should really think about setting up say three tournaments each year for traditional only 50, 40, 30 and running some sort of grand prix. I reckon it should be timbers only [or discounted distances to allow for differences between various arrow types, dress up optional and make a picnic day of it. This shoot would make a great return to the future end shoot day of such a tournament.

Note to JCM

I used those aluminium tapered extenders for timber arrows and shot the arrows at the City of Sydney shoot. It was great getting extra life out of 'broken" arrows. Very easy to pullout in comparison to other field point set ups. A number of folk were interested......you might have to get a number in...as wel as a supply of screw in field points.

Keven,
Thank you - have a small batch on the way.
Will be looking into some cheaper priced products in the New Year 2009.

GA.....Ahhhhh! I wondered when your interest would be evident.
I so do hate being cryptic but pray tell about which "more"?

A. The shoot?
B. Steve?
C. Yumi bow video clips? I know you will be interested even if it is a deformed "horse bow".
D. Exciting technology extending arrows which are really old technology but very useful?

So many interests, so little time!

The extenders are tubes of aluminium which are about 3 inches long.

Think about a traumatic point in an arrow makers life or even an arrow owner's life.........
When your timber arrows have sped target bound only to encounter a short, sharp experience with a hard something that leaves them [or their end] shattered at the place where the point ends on the shaft.

Well you pick up the arrows, even if that one inch too short now. The aluminium tubes are tapered down/necked down like a magnum rifle cartridge from slightly like 11/32 down to a smaller section the size of about 1916. At the thinner end they have been drilled and tapped with the same thread that will take say either a bullet screw in point, a field screw in point, a screw in judo [if they are made], a screw in blunt or even a screw in broad head. In fact with this newly refurbished arrow, now at the right length you can use the same arrow for a greater range of point types and masses for tuning.
You could even practice at the target range regularly, be one with your arrow heaps and on the way home spot a bunny at your mates driveway to his farm, swap heads and proceed to bunny stew.

So I now make all my arrows 2 inches longer and from there can turn this original set into three different sets over time greatly reducing cost and time associated with chasing good scores with matched arrows.

Means those really expensive matched timbers turned into artworks cost $5 odd each rather than $15 odd each even with the cost of the tubes. Means they are more drammatically tunable. You can even shoot the same arrows out of two or three bows by changing point mass.

Best of all the front ends look great and they penetrate the target butts really well but are much easier to pull out. The other guy on my butt at the shoot was racing to pull my arrows out before others.....made his share of 400 arrows easier over the day.....mine did not really need lubrication into those thermal plactic round butts.

Have you considered YouTube??

Hmmm..... That Yumi looks intriguing. Footwear looks a little suspect though.

I had not considered You Tube.
I have not got that great a handle on it [the technology and ethics] but do enjoy things I see there.
By ethics I mean that whilst this is in the public domain it is not quite as invasive on people's rights as such a broad application as You Tube.
I took as much care as I could to make sure that no minors were featured and that the target candidate knew I had filmed them.
I have offered the material to Sydney Bowmen as they already feature some clips.
The other aspect is that I cannot edit these roughs or even rotate them 90 degrees. If you can and wish to, be my guest. I am all for spreading the bare bow infection.
