#1 Post by Lochmoy » Wed Dec 27, 2006 1:34 pm

Here we go!

Sunday Febuary 18th. The Leongatha Medieval Society is holding their first majoy Trad. Comp. Unlike their previous comps. any archer can attend as you DONT have to wear costuming.

The aim is to offer Victorians another well run comp and the guys have worked hard to ensure that different events are fun, safe and challenging.

Re-enactor or not I encourage any archer out there to get down to their sensational range and strutt your stuff.

I might even be able to make it to this one. Is there a fee for people who want to sell stuff?

Think I'm gonna have to make it along to this one!

I got the email but someone made the actual newsletter about A3 size, so maybe it'd be easier if I asked a couple of questions and then everyone can view it here.

Ok, questions...

1 The address (melways ref would be best)

2 Fees

3 Commencement time

4 Bow classes

I think that'd answer most people's questions (all my ones anyhow :P )

Cheers, look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks Gav.
I should mention that you dont have to wear medieval clothing or armour for this event(if you want to thats fine as well)
Would also like to add that laminated or backed bows can shoot in the trad longbow class if they confirm to victorian/medieval design.
Please dont hesitate to ask questions.

Count me in, look forward to seeing you all there!

So how are we gonna know who is from Ozbow and who isn't where we're there? I still reckon some Ozbow patches would be awesome!

Leongatha shoot

#10 Post by White Hawk » Thu Jan 11, 2007 8:10 am

Leeroy,

I will be there with the crew from Geelong Archers, Lochmoy (Leigh) and Mick Smith plus a few others that post here on Ozbow. We will be the ones with more than a few horsebows hence when we travel in a group the name 'The Horde' has been mentioned once or twice! and no doubt some of us will have Geelong Archers hats and shirts on.

Failing that I could wear a carnation or something!

So come up and say hi. It is always great to meet fellow ozbowers face to face.

cheers

The Horde cometh!

#12 Post by White Hawk » Thu Jan 11, 2007 11:08 am

G'Day Wing, your post got me thinking, hordes in the East, hordes in the West..... look out Adelaide! :D

reminded me of something I read recently....

".....tactics were marked by speed, surprise and massive mobility. They approached in widely separated columns, both to ease logistics as well as to gain maneuvering room. Once they had isolated their target, the tumans deployed in wide sweeps, converging on the enemy from several directions. Upon contact the Mongols played cat and mouse, standing-off while devastating opponents with massed arrow fire, or charging in close only to veer off while discharging yet another vicious rain of shafts. Opponents who took the bait and gave pursuit were quickly cut off and liquidated. The constant rain of arrows, the converging swarms of charges and probes, all carried out by the encircling Mongols, were usually enough to "soften up" an enemy. Typically the opposing force broke and then the deadliest butchery began. As is well known, a force is most vulnerable in retreat, and the Mongols were ruthless".

Cool as...I know Mick Smith face to face, so it should be easy for me to pick him out of a crowd (I bought my Martin off of him so I think he'll want to see me too =).

Look forward to seeing you there all, cya soon!

I will either be wearing a blue singlet (my uniform) or maybe a t-shirt with a motif like 'ask me how much my bow is' or something.

Another question,

I have bamboo backed longbows, in the English style, with rounded bellies, widest at the handle, man-tall and blah blah. Does the bamboo backing preclude it from comp as the boo wasn't used in England till the 1800's?

Hi Yeoman,
If your bow looks like an English longbow(D or flattened D shape,no window, man length or longer ) then it will be fine for the trad longbow class.

The Horde

#17 Post by Lochmoy » Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:55 pm

Are yes and I saw what was created and it was good. It seems that the heart rates are now beginniing to pump round the trad traps. Lookout Len, Morgan and Anthony et al. I hope you can cater for the enthusiasm. I guess from word of mouth that you might have 40 archers at this comp. at least and that's conservative. Terrific for a new event.

10 or more from Geelong
5 I know of from Ballarat
15 of your own
Several from Canberra
and a few more from ozbow

The start of the trad calendar for 2007 is looking good!

Hey, the more the merrier, we are really looking forward to this event and are determined to make it a great day for everyone who makes the drive down.Would like to add we have had a lot of enquiries about buying bows&arrows (LMS has just done two shows this fortnight and the interest in the archery was fantastic) so anyone with archery gear for sale(particually longbows) please bring it along.

I'm really looking forward to this event. I plan to take my gear down to a paddock near home and practice my clout shooting. I did very poorly at this event at the Geelong shoot. Leigh has been giving me some pointers. I knew there must be a better way of doing it rather than just aiming at a certain cloud that happened to be above the target. Not that I really care too much about competing to win though. :D

It's a pity I haven't got an period costume. It's going to be great to see the Leongatha folk doing their stuff. It will also be great to catch up with a few of the die hards I know from previous events. 8)

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Good Morning Mick
It's a pity I haven't got an period costume.
Those are dangerous words - just keep on saying them.

I can see it now, 2 years down the track and there he be. Now the real question is, "Is there going a sudden increase in the Asian hordes?"

"A sagittis hungarorum libera nos Domine!"

Frilly frocks

#23 Post by Lochmoy » Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:28 pm

What was that Steve, you want a photo of Mick dressed in a frilly frock?

Oh sorry, you want a picture of the bow.....! Oops.

Actually these bows are a trial for Wildwood. We wanted to get a very authentic looking bow for reenactors that performed well. Yew bows are incredibly expensive to bring in.

Turbows are fine and a good price so we won't hope to compete with them but we will be able to offer a very "english" looking bow with a fantastic reputation at a reasonable price. That's the idea anyway. I am looking forward to seeing the bows myself and I'll post a picture as soon as it comes in.

I've heard len go on about this post and after reading it I can't believe the support!!
I probably should say that LMS won't be in period gear. We may don it over lunch and show you what we can do with big shiny metal sticks tho. We will ( hopefully everyone got the memo) be wearing our civilian uniform of green Polo's/jumpers.
I'm not sure if Len has said anything but there will be a low cost lunch available and for anyone traveling long distances and staying the Saturday night here is a casual invite to join a few LMS members up at the local for dinner, a few drinks and a get to know you session, as I doubt there will be enough time on the Sunday to get around to everyone.

Please guys wear your gear if you want to. We're all freinds around here. At the very least give us a demo of head banging in armour. We could all nominate our champions and cheer from the sidelines. I bags Len.

I hear that there could be some from up Canberra and Bega way coming down. Is this true?

Seriously though this is going to be a great meeting between the different genre's of archery. Can't wait!

Lots of interest in the event at Yarra Valley this weekend. I gave out plenty of flyers and a lot off people had allready heard about it.
Anyone know the web address where I can book fine weather?
