Anysia and I are planning to stay at the Mercure Geelong cos its real central from what the travel agent said and has wireless broadband. Yup...that's my wife...archer geek or is that geek archer. :)

If she could she would be typing on her notebook while shooting

Look forward to seeing people there as soon as I get all of the bookings and logistics sorted out.

Happy shooting everyone :)

Things to do around Geelong

#33 Post by Lochmoy » Tue May 30, 2006 10:54 pm

Geelong is a nice enough city but the real, and if you have any time at all, not to be missed jewel is the Great Ocean Rd. You only need to travel 30 mins to an hour and you will see some of the wonders of this area and some lovely little coastal towns.

Saturday night we are organising a meal at Irish Murphies. An Irish pub with loads of atmosphere and great music. Due to the night shoot we will arrive there fairly late so they are looking at putting on pizza and pasta (not very Irish I know but cook doesn't go past 8.30.

In a convival atmosphere after a hard days shoot we will eat, drink, tell tales of the day, swap tidbits and we will draw the raffle and award the days trophies.

I can't wait!

Yesterday I thought it was about time I went over the the Geelong Archers Inc grounds at the Jarvis Oval at the Deakin University and introduce myself to Leigh and the other guys there.

As you'd expect, they're a real nice bunch of people. 8) I picked the right day for a visit as they had all their 3D targets out and set up. I was very impressed with the number and variety of targets they owned. They have about 10 different 3D targets and they're all in excellent condition. The shooting grounds are even more pleasant than what I had thought. It's a real park like setting amoungst large native trees and there's plenty of room for all the targets and more. The grounds back into a steep slope and this slope makes an ideal and safe backstop for waywards arrows. I'm certain it will be a great course for the "Great Southern Traditional Archery Tournament".

Of course I brought my bow along (the Atilla was in the car) and I didn't take much persuading from Leigh, to string it up and try to deface some of those almost pristine foam animals with 11/32" holes. :)

I had a great time, even a few light showers didn't dampen my enthusiasm for the job at hand. In fact I enjoyed it so much, I'm seriously thinking about joining the club. I'll need lots of practice before the big event anyway.

Mick

Sounds great Mick. Looking forward to shooting at the range and meeting up with other trad archers in September. Love to see the Atilla as well. Roll on September :)

Micks visit

#37 Post by Lochmoy » Sun Jun 25, 2006 11:56 pm

What a great ambassador for the Geelong club and the trad. comp. is Mick and he isn't even a member yet. We will have 30 3d targets for the various events we are holding. It will be sensational.

Incidently, Keith Forrester mentioned that the closest Motel is booked out by archers! This has floored me because I don't have any idea about how many archers are coming yet except by word of mouth.

Please get those entries in so we know how many to cater for. I will post a reminder mid July as a new thread.

I can provide more accomadation details if anyone requires them. Contact me with any questions you might have.

Cheers Leigh

Have Case will Travel

#38 Post by MaylandL » Fri Jul 28, 2006 1:09 am

Well its taken a while but I am about to take delivery of a case for the bows, arrows, shooting gear and supplies. My wife and I decided to get the case so that we could keep all of our tackle in the same place when we travel to the shoot in geelong. Having one piece bows can be a right pain if you have to transport them. The case will be big enough to hold 4 bows and 40 arrows.

Dimensions: L - 1650mm H - 50mm W - 500mm

With the back seat down in my car, the case just fits - has a shade less than 2cms clearance.

Also hoping to have the new grozer bows for the shoot too.

See ya in geelong :)

That's one serious piece of gear you have there Mayland.

Now what's that old saying about putting all your eggs into one basket .... :)

I look forward to seeing which bows you pick.

Mayland,

That looks great mate. Is it all made from aluminium? It should protect the bows and arras pretty well. It won't look so shiny and new after the first trip with the airlines though.

I remember you mentioning that Jet Star classed your bows etc as dangerous or some such thing. I flew to Darwin this year with Virgin and they classed the bows and arras as 'Restricted Items'. That meant they had to be signed in and signed for at collection. The items don't get stored with the normal cargo either so I believe. In one way it should be better for us as they aren't as likely to loose them - maybe. :?

G'day

Mick
If I get the grozer bows in time...it will be the Avarian and the Kodiak Magnum. If not I'll bring the mongolian along.

Jeff
Its made of high impact and light weight plastic reinforced with aluminium edging with a large piano hinge. The case can be locked. No probs with the case getting banged around as long as the bows and arrows are ok.

We are flying with virgin for the reason that they don't class this as piece of luggage, rather its allocated 5kg from your luggage allowance irrespective of the weight of the item. Pretty generous by any standards. Anysia and I intend to use one suitcase and have 1 piece of carryon each.

Really looking forward to September. Wife should be posting some pics real soon too.

Happy shooting all :)

Excitement growing

#44 Post by Lochmoy » Sat Jul 29, 2006 11:41 pm

Wow there is a lot of excitement in the air. The events are being well planned down here in Geelong to make sure you are not disappointed. Entries are now coming in thick and fast and numbers are looking excellent.

Unfortunately the Celtic gig on the Friday unavoidably has been postponed. However for those interested a visit to the pub on the Friday where we are having our Saturday night presentation supper could be in order. It's an Irish pub with a great atmosphere.

So keep those entries coming and we will see you in a month.

cheers Leigh

Steve

The closest motel is the Aristocrat Waurnvale (phone 03 52418211). It's just across the creek from the venue. They don't do meals though. The next closest, a about 1 kilometre from the venue, on the Princes Hwy, is the Waurn Ponds Hotel. The Waurn Ponds Hotel (phone 03 52431244) is a large modern hotel motel. They do pretty good meals and they have pokies.

Slightly further away is the Kiloran Motel (phone 03 52436333) at about 1.3 kms from the venue, on the Princes Hwy Waurn Ponds. There's a small caravan park right next to this motel. I think it's run by the motel, but if you're interested you might have to give them a ring.

There's heaps of other motels in Belmont which is the next surburb towards Geelong. I'm pretty certain that you could just roll up to any of these motels and find a vacancy. There's also quite a few in Grovedale, which is also right next to Waurn Ponds too.

If you're looking for cheaper accomodation there's three large caravan parks with on-site vans and cabins in Belmont, next to the Barwon River. There's the Barwon Caravan Park, The Riverglenn Caravan Park and the Billabong Caravan Park. All these caravan parks are about 7 klms from the venue, towards Geelong.

I hope this helps mate. If you need any further help, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do. :D

Friday night

#51 Post by Lochmoy » Mon Aug 07, 2006 9:40 pm

Sadly the Celtic gig has had to be postponed which is no good for anyone coming to archery. However I recommend the atmosphere, food and entertainment at Irish Murphies which we should go to for Friday night for dinner and drinks. There is also a band always on (free) 0425803678 if anyone is interested.

I will be contactable Friday after 6.30pm on my mobile 0425803678 and I will happily drive/escort you to and from pub.

G'day Leigh

Anysia and I will be lobbing into Geelong at about 6:30pm on Friday from Melbourne and checking into the Mercure (presuming we don't get lost along the way and end up in Adelaide   :D ). Would love to catch up with some archers then for some drinks and a meal. Any idea as to when dinner might be and how far it is from the Mercure?

Having a look at the Map, once I get onto Princes Hwy, its a pretty straight run to Geelong. Thing is navigating my way out in a hire car from Melbourne CBD could be a challenge.

I was checking on the net and I noticed there's an archery tackle place in weeribee (Bows, Arrows and Bits) just off the Princes Hwy in Watton st. Any idea as to how well stocked they are for trad gear?

See you at the shoot :)

PS...Rego forms and cheques are on the way...we'll be shooting horsebows and trad vintage recurves.

The quickest and easiest way to get to Geelong from Melbourne CBD is to jump on to the Westgate freeway at the first opportunity. The freeway runs along just to the south of the city, on the other side of the Yarra River. The freeway will take you straight into Geelong.

Bows Arrows and Bits doesn't cater to traditional archers. They carry a range of basic things like nocks, broadheads, field points, gloves/tabs and the excellent Silverwood timber shafts. It might be worth dropping in and mentioning that you only shoot traditional and note the response you get. :)

I'll catch up with you both when you get here.

The owner at Bows Arrows & Bits has unusual and strong views in relation to barebow and traditional shooting, that's for sure.

Steve

You will probably be better off staying at the Waurn Ponds Hotel, as there will be plenty of other competitors staying there too and I'm sure you'll be able to get a lift very easily to and from Irish Murphy's.

I didn't know where Irish Murphy's pub was anyway, until now.

I've been busy making arrows for the event. Not being much of a target shooter, I only had a few practice arrows on hand. I bought a dozen Silverwood shafts that I thought would be the correct spine for my 54# Chek-Mate Atilla recurve, but when I bare shaft tested them, they flew very poorly, I even broke one when it hit the straw bale at the wrong angle. I finished making them up anyway and sure enough they were badly underspined and wouldn't group at all. They shot alright out of my son's 40# Ben Pearson recurve though, so now they're his.

Anyway I bought another dozen more heavily spined Silverwood shafts and made them up. These ones shoot as well as I can. :D

I originally planned to use my back quiver to carry my arrows at the competition, but after hurting my shoulder reaching for an arrow (old rotor cuff injury) I thought better of it.

I liked the idea of using one of those nifty tournament type side quivers that fit like a holster, with the arrows angled back at about 45 degrees. After looking around at various archery sites, I decided to have a go at making my own. It worked out fairly well. At least it works extremely well, even though it looks a bit amateurish. :)

So for me, it's all starting to come together for the big shoot. 8) Now it's practice, practice, practice, but don't fear, I won't be hard to beat.
