Hi Mick ..

do have a shoot at Sale on Thursday night and Sunday.... i need it.

any way, i have never hit anyone standing behind me yet...

like others, Virgin was very good to me with the "restricted" item 'cause i screwed the lid down on the roughie carry box i made..

Anyway I bought another dozen more heavily spined Silverwood shafts and made them up. These ones shoot as well as I can. :D ...
G'day Mick

I am looking forward to having a look at the Atilla. I've heard many complimentary comments & endorsements about the Chek-mate bows. I'll be bringing the 57# Avarian Hornbow and 56# Kodiak Magnum and Anysia will be bringing the 40# Scythian (String bridge has been glued on and is holding) and the 32# Wing Archery Swift Wing. Not to mention enough arrows to stop a mid sized raiding party ;)

Both Anysia and I were agonising over what other bows we were going to bring along.

Catch you on the range and happy shooting :)

Mayland. Mick and others.

Pack the cameras. I, at least, have expectations of a flurry of photos from this shoot.

No worries there Grahame, Anysia is quite the shutter bug when she isnt shooting or geeking out on the computer.

Grahame, I'll make sure the digital camera is fully charged, that will give me the opportunity to take about 140 photos, I believe. :D

Mayland, I'm still not too sure which bow I'll be using. I've been practicing in the backyard with the Atilla, the Kodiak Magnum and the Howard Hill longbow and there's very little difference between the sizes of the groups. I suppose the lighter draw weight Kodiak Magnum (50#) might offer some advantages if I'm going to be shooting it a lot.

It's so frustrating you know, I can shoot one group at 25 yards that will be no bigger than 4 inches and then the next time I would need to be shooting at a 3D elephant in order to hit it. :? I suppose if it was really easy, there would be no challenge and it would soon get boring.

It's not far away now. I'm looking forward to seeing you there. 8)

G'day Mick

I'll be bringing my Kodiak Mag along so would love to do a comparison. Regardless of what you'll be shooting on the day, would love to check out the Attilla given I've heard so much about it.

Groupings...don't get me started on groupings   :)

If there is a 3D shoot it'll be our first time shooting that course. Also it will only be our 3rd time that we will have used the new horsebows. The minor repair job on Anysia's scythian seems to be holding up well. Still looking forward to it. We are flying out to Melb for some sightseeing tommorow morning (6am flight) and packing tonight.

Looking forward to seeing people on the range.

Happy shooting all :)

All is in readiness

#68 Post by Lochmoy » Wed Aug 30, 2006 9:35 pm

Hello everyone,

Only 3 sleeps to go and it all begins for a weekend of many arrows. The night shoot is dependent on the weather. Water and electricity don't mix too well. In spite of that all the shoots have been marked out etc. and final count is 60 archers which for a first comp of it's kind is, I think, pretty damn good! I know you guys can get up to 200 but we are working on it. Give us time and they'll be National Trad. Champs before you know it. This comp will become a regular feature if all goes well and so far so good. You'll have to be patient with a couple of the events that are of our own invention. I reckon you'll like them.

I will escort everyone Friday at 7.00 to Irish Murphies for those from interstate so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone for a pre shoot chat.

Catcha on Friday or Saturday
I have taken the path less trod and it has made all the difference

Both Anysia and I are very much looking forward to this. I was checking the program of shoots and it looks fantastic!

We'll give you a call when we lob into Geelong on Friday late afternoon. We are picking up the hire car at 4pm on Friday and expect to be in Geelong before 6pm.

See you on there :)

Yeah mate, there's heaps of rabbits all around there. There's a place only a stone's throw away towards Colac that's literally crawling with them.

I hunt on a property right up on the very crest of the hill behind your motel. It's a couple of kilometers away from you.

You will probably see rabbits running around on the course tomorrow. It makes me feel at though I should be carrying a blunt or two. :? :)

I thought all the "out of towners" were meeting tonight to have tea somewhere in Geelong. :)

I had a practice session in the backyard tonight and I'm starting to freakout, my shooting was abysmal to say the least. Why now? :?

I plan to get there fairly early in the morning, around 9am. I'll see you and the gang then. I'm looking forward to it.

I hope the forecast rain holds off for a while at least. See ya mate.

G'day all

well Anysia and I lobbed into geelong about 7pm after a rather eventful arrival in Melbourne. We arrived 30 minutes ahead schedule....but....There was a mix up with the pick up point for the transfer to the hotel in Melb and we find out when we get to the hotel our room reservation was cancelled by Qantas Holidays.

To the credit of the hotel people they made sure we had a room to stay in and they were apologetic for the mix up even though it wasnt their fault. We were very well looked after by the staff at Mercure Welcome. Their service certainly lived up to their name. Next time we are in Melb we'll make point of staying there again but I am going to make the bookings personally. Gonna have to have words with Qantas.

Got into Geelong and met up with some of the people. Great company but the service was...well..slow. As Anysia says "if they had been any slower we would have thought they were dead"!

Travel to Geelong was pretty quick once we got out of Melb.

Looking forward to participating in the shoot this weekend and I hope the weather keeps fine. See you all on the range...its been a long day and time to rest up for tommorow.

Happy shooting all :)

Day one of the Trad Archery Tourney in Geelong

#75 Post by Anysia » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:51 pm

It went wonderfully. Was great to put faces to all the names on OzBow. :) And my costuming was appreciated. Assassin. I was going to keep the wrapping around my lower face, but my sunglasses kept fogging up so went 'nekkid faced'.

Scythian performed beautifully with the new arrows Mayland made specifically for the bow. That scythian has more power than I thought, as I was managing to launch arrows 3 meters past the 55meter target/clout.

He brought me back to the hotel as my legs were getting a bit wobbly, and the pain meds were wearing off. No use in me trying to do everything today, because if I had tried, I would miss out all of tomorrows shooting events. We had thought ahead of time to bringmy laptop, and a DVD to watch, so he wouldn't have to come traipsing back here to drop me off but as luck would have it, we forgot to flick the power switch on the wall outlet so the battery didn't get the needed charge. Whoops.

Now I have to wait for Mayland to come back so I can get some FOOD! I passed hungry about an hour ago, and have slid into ravenous.

I've just got home from the first day and boy am I tired. I don't think I've shoot some many arrows in a day before. It was great fun though. 8) :D I meet many people who I already knew, for the first time. :D

A great bunch of people. One thing I like about archery, you certainly get more than your fair share of characters.

I took heaps of photos, unfortunately half of them didn't come out because I must have bumped the settings, but here's the ones that did work.................

G'day all

Today was a great day. Did the castle clout shoot and hunt. Was very pleased with the result of the castle clout. Wasnt so good at the 3D field shoot (hunt style with only one arrow allowed per target, but second arrow if the first hit the target in a non kill zone). Going to have to do more 3D field shoots, they are by far the best way to do field shoots.

Thanks to Mick, Les, Paddy et al (the shoot group I was shooting in for field) for the great company. I'd love to get the pics for the shoot at the bear :D

Decided to leave before the aerial targets and the night shoot to see to Anysia. Will be at the shoot again tommorow. This has been by far a very enjoyable time.

Great to finally meet Mick! The Chek-Mate and the Bear are awesome bows.

Happy shooting and looking forward to the range tommorow.

G'day all

Huge surprise, didnt expect this. Kudos to Leigh, Gavin and all at Geelong Archers for a great and fun shoot. Looking forward to the next time. Also thanks to all the participants and shooters, great to meet you and looking forward to the next time we meet on the range. Thank you for the company.

Fantastic to see aboout a dozen people with horsebows - some made by toth and kassai. They were really well made and smooth drawing bows.

Would love give Anysia a heartfelt "well done". She had only shot a Scythian twice before the tourney and wasnt able to shoot the hunt and the events after that on the Saturday because of her recovery from the surgery. She wanted to rest up on the saturday so she could shoot on the sunday. Despite some discomfort on Sunday she tackled the hunt the herd and the target shoot in difficult windy conditions. Anysia is having to change her shooting technique for the scythian as well. Overall she has done really well. So great shooting hon, you're number 1 in my eyes :)

Happy shooting all :)

Well done MaylandL.

The weekend was a total success. Everyone I spoke to agreed it was a fantastic weekend.

We had some very unusual events that showed lots of originality and thought. The clout shoot represented shooting at an enemy's castle, complete with battlements (hay bales :) ). There was the king in the centre behind the battlements and a noble on each side of him. If you landed an arrow in the circle (castle) it scored on point, if you hit one of the nobles you scored 2 points and a hit on the king was worth 5 points. I can't believe how good some of the competitors were at this event. My technique of just pointing the arrow into the sky and shoot didn't yield good results.

After the clout event we had two round 2 x 10 targets) of fairly conventional 3D targets, but they were set out in lovely surroundings. The placement also taxed the competitors with extreme uphill and downhill shots. I was in a group of excellent archers. They made me feel inadequate. It was lots of fun though all the same. Once again the rules were slightly different to the norm. If you hit the foam target in the inner kill zone, you scored 3 points, a hit in the outer kill zone was worth one point, if you hit the animal elsewhere you had to take two large steps back and have one more shot, but you only got to do this once per target.

These were the events of the first day. I'll talk about the events of the second day in another post.

In the meantime, here's some more photos .........

I've got heaps of photos, but when I try to post them in multiples the screen crashes, so I'm doing them individually and in no particular order.

Today, the first event was called "shooting the herd", basically it was another clout event, but with a twist. The various 3D targets had scores marked on the side of them you couldn't see. The scores varied depending whether it was a buck or a doe. The two wolves had the highest scores of all, but once they had been killed (killing zone hits) they were removed from the field. A hit anywhere was worth some points, but a killing shot on any one target meant any non-killing shots became nul and void. As in most clout events, we shot 3 rounds at one distance and then moved forwards 10 yards and repeated the same procedure. Of course these are 3D targets, we wouldn't even consider doing anything like this with real game animals.

After the "shooting the herd" event we indulged in some more basic target shooting, the only hitch was, we started shooting at standard Olympic type targets at 60 meters and then moved slowly to within 20 meters. What made this event particularly difficulat was the gusting side wind. I was aiming over one metre upwind and my arrows were landing one metre downwind. That together with the extreme range (initially at least) made it very difficult, but once again there were some masters competing who made it look easy. It wasn't easy for me though. :? It was great fun even if I broke three arrows during this event (I think they hit the solid timber supports  )

The weather was very good for the event. Actually Saturday was T-shirt weather, well at least in the morning it was. It clouded over on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday it was considerably cooler and overcast, but we only got one small light shower. Just after the event the heavens opened.

bmlongshot aka Ben was a vendor at the shoot. Ben imports and sells Howard Hill bows and accessories, Silverwood shafts and some other bows. I found Ben's wares extremely interesting. He had a fantastic range of bows on display. I was drooling uncontrollably as I just love Howard Hill bows. Ben is a member of this site, he goes by the name of bmlongshot and if you're looking to buy a Howard Hill bow at a very reasonable price, he's your man. He's a real nice bloke too. 8)

Not only was Ben a vendor, he is also a bloody good shot. He won heaps of prizes. I was really surprised at just how affordable Howard Hill bows are. In fact, I'm negotiating with the wife right now on the fiscal arrangements. What better day to talk about these things than father's day. 8)
