Gladstone Traditional Shoot

#1 Post by Basalt » Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:06 pm

Well I guess most of the crew are away hunting or at shoots, half your luck. I'm just trying to get some info on the Gladstone Shoot in June as we have a bunch of good Kiwis coming over for it and they'd like to know what the format etc. is ?? Dave or Sue, maybe you guys know hey ?? With a bit of luck we will have a rematch for the Trans/Tasman Team Shootout there, so we'll need all our best Ozzie shooters !!! Anyway if somebody could post any info on the Shoot as it comes to hand that would be great, I know the Kiwi folks look on this site a fair bit.
Cheers.

:) Thanks Bill, Received an email from Jeff and David K with respect to the Muster BUT my reply emails keep getting returned as being unable to be delivered. As already mentioned booked the seat ordered the camper but I'm now all dressed up with nowhere to go. Now the last thing you Aussies need is some Kiwi wandering up the road north looking for possums to shoot so a few more directions might save us all a bit of hassle and help keep me out of trouble. Looking forward to seeing you all again and this time giving you a few laughs by joining you on the course. Does the string go to the front or the back and I have to remember the feathery bits are nearest me RIGHT? Bring on June, Kelvin

Gladstone look out the Kiwis are coming

#3 Post by Basalt » Tue Mar 29, 2005 8:38 pm

Hey Kelvin, we diffinately can't have you guys running around loose, who knows what could happen  If the Gladstone crew don't get a flier to you guys with directions, Ill do you one of my famous "mud maps" and that should fill in a day or two. :? We are only 1 1/2 hours up the road from the shoot so if you have a spare day or two before the shoot come on up. Mate I've got to tell you, we're not falling for the old "don't know which end of the bow goes where". Bruce and Amber Scott tried to tell me they never gets time to practice but I bet it's not fairies that have poked holes in those bloody 3D targets in their backyard [ mostly in the kill zone] Anyway Kelvin we are looking forward to catching up again and having a laugh with you guys. I think Dianne and Bob [U.S.] are coming over from N.Z. for it as well??
Cheers Bill.

Hi Bill, Hit Brisbane airport am on the 9th and reckon that I can make it to Gladstone in the budget camper by Fri pm. Ned to be back in Brisbane to fly home Fri 17th, flight departs 11.25am. Helen will not be goming she is busy with the final two units for her Uni Degree and has an exam on the 17th. Thought I might checkout a few of the tourist type enterprises which could provide some ideas for further development here. Nothing planned but I have a bed on wheels so just follow my nose and any reccomendations you folk may have. Guess I had better learn how to fire this thing been a few months since my elbow decided it needed a rest. It would be nice to have the arrow reach the target. More interested in seeing if we can progress the link between an Australian Shoot and the Outdoors New Zealand Rendezvous shoot. Looking forward to saying hello to all those who made it over here last January and checking they have recovered from drinking our "cold" beer. Regards Kelvin

Just about finished the fliers for shoot. It is on 11,12,13 june. Will post on this site and you can download and print them and post back or email us with your entry. If you have been before, and we've got your address, you should get one in the snail mail probably next week or early following week. Hope that helps.

Hi David, appreciated your earlier email but been having email/web problems lately and couldn't get a reply through. If you are posting fliers out could you please send me one to Outdoors New Zealand Traditional Rendezvous, O'Hara Wildlife Estate, 540 SH 33, RD 9, Te Puke, 3701 New Zealand. I will post it on our notice board and put it onto www.nzarchery.com( the developing Rendezvous home site) for you. Looking forward to putting a face to the name. Thanks for your input Bill, give Linda a cuddle for us. Erron look what you've started through this website, thanks mate. Regards to all Kelvin

Hi everyone - you better look out Kelvin, I've been thinking about doing some practice, so I might actually hit something by June.
So tell me why can't Helen study over here - it'll be warmer for her you know.
Look forward to catching up with everyone.

Com'on Sue give us a chance you really don't need to practise. Just smile sweetly and look pretty and we won't be able to concentrate anyway. Hows that old fellow of yours, on the mend I hope. Looking forward to seeing you both again. Regards Kelvin

Getting to the Shoot

#9 Post by Kiwi Longbow » Mon Apr 04, 2005 5:38 pm

Hi All

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to which of the following options you'd recommend re getting to the shoot at Gladstone:

1. Flying into Brisbane, hiring and driving
2. Flying into Rockhampton
3. Flying into Gladstone

Can anyone tell me how far away the shoot is from the airport at Gladstone (or Rockhampton) and whether there is a bus service that goes anywhere close? I'm trying to minimise time off work (and away from family!) and was hoping to fly as close as possible (ie Gladstone).

I can't wait to get there and sample what this 'cold' beer is all about - and not to mention to shoot a few arrows!!

I think all of the below (including me!!) are heading over:
Bruce & Amber, Kelvin, Dianne & Bob, Darrall, Eddie, Harm

I hoping Tom and possibly Jim might be able to make it also.

Cheers
Rob

Gladstone shoot

#11 Post by Basalt » Mon Apr 04, 2005 8:23 pm

Hi gang, Good stuff Sue, hope steve's on the mend too and look forward to catching up over a "cold beer" too. Kelvin, two Kiwis together travelling in Oz unescorted sounds bloody dangerous to me. You guys want to watch those DROP-BEARS that time of year, mating season starts about early June I think? :?
Rob, if you want to fly into Rockhampton airport on Wednesday or Thursday there would be a piece of floor for you at our place. Eddie flys in Wed. and Bruce and Amber Thurs. We will have a spare seat in some car for you somewhere to get down to the shoot and back to Rocky. Rockhampton is 1 1/2 hrs drive south of here. Don't know anything about Gladstone airport but I reckon they'd have one  Kelvin probably needs someone to keep him out of trouble but
Rob if we can help just post us on here mate,
Bill.

Thanks heaps for the offers guys. I'm just going to flick off an email to a tourism place in Gladstone to check out distances and travel options from Gladstone Airport - as I'm hoping to fly in on the Friday instead of Thursday. I'll keep you posted.

By the way Bill, I'd like not to have to take a tent. Linda mentioned that there may be a possibility of a 'communal' tent being organised? I'm pretty sure Eddie is in the same boat. So it would be great if we didn't have to bring one over.

Sue, that's enough practice eh!

Well I'd better get back to making up some arrows!

Cheers
Rob

#13 Post by Basalt » Tue Apr 05, 2005 7:17 pm

Hi Rob, No worries about the tent I'll pack the two spare ones we have. Bruce and Amber have booked one [ the cosy honeymoon variety] that will leave a 12 x9 cabin tent for any of the homeless Kiwis. You might want a sleeping bag 'cause even in Oz it gets a little chilly in Gladstone around June but the good news is, I don't think it will snow and if it does we can all squeeze into Kelvin's camper hey ! Rob if you need to be picked up from Gladstone airport let us know your arrival time and we may be able to pick you up. [ if we haven't had too many of those "cold beers"]
Hey Sue, I don't know if you guys have a spare tent as well ??
I've organized the team trophies for the shoot out and I'm just wondering are we likely to have a U.S.A. team or a Scotch team by jimminy??!!

Hi Bill

That would be sweet if you could pick me up from Gladstone - I've flicked off an email to the Gladstone Area Water Board (??) who I'm hoping may be of some help re travel options from the airport. Anyway I'm hoping to finalise things early next week so will let you know.

Yep I'm was planning on packing a sleeping bag - so if I could reserve a couple of m2 in that cabin tent that would be awesome.

Re the Scottish contingent, I caught up with Frankie in the weekend and unfortunately she can't get away from work. But Harm that Dutchman with apparently Scottish ancestory (?? pretty dubious if you ask me) is planning on coming - and Bob and Dianne could form most of the US team.

Cheers

Hey Bill, give a hoy if you need us to bring up anything extra - I'm pretty sure we've got spares of most camping stuff, and with the Brisbane connections we could soon muster something together. Sounds like it's going to be a blast. Roll on June - catchya - sue

Don't have to be a member of ABA,3DAAA or anything else. Doesn't matter if you are either. It is an open invitation shoot. The club has independant insurance.

Practising my ducking and diving as I'm not into body piercing or collecting clips round the ear. Easy to be cheeky when you've got a big ditch in between eh!

Sue That's fantastic news! Now if I can join your team and at each target distract the others, slip you my arrows for you to shoot then I will FINALLY be able to present a score card which doesn't have just circles on it. I'm sure I could find some nice warm N.Z. beer in exchange for the favour. Only a couple mind we don't want you becoming addicted to the stuff.

Hi Sue

Flights all booked. New string on the bow (nocking point not quite right yet...) Been a bit slack on the practice though . Will there be a novice peg? :)

Not long now - which means I need to sort those arrows out. Have you booked the weather?

I'll pass your message on to Darrall.

How about posting it on this site, the map I mean. Two more Kiwi's lined up Bob and Dianne are heading over on the 5th and travel north on the 8th. Think this might be a silent invasion?

The map is on page 2 of the flier(back in about the 8th post of this thread), but when you get approx 500km's north of Brisvegas, you will come to a place called Benaraby with a longish bridge crossing the Boyne River. Immediately after the bridge, on the right is a Caltex Service Station and on the left is a general store with a Shell emeblem. Continue heading north for about another 1km and you will come to an intersection which, if you turn right will take you into Gladstone. If you get that far you have passed the turn. It is about 100m before that you turn to the left and head toward lake awoonga. If you miss all of that, we will have signs out with fluoro orange letters with "bowhunters" and arrows pointing the way. These will be put out on Thursday afternoon. If you are coming from the north then after you pass the Calliope crossroads ( Choice petroleum on the left) continue on south about another 12kms until you come to the crossroads mentioned above and turn right and follow signs.
Any other questions, send me pm or email

Clear as mud!!!
