Way out West.

#1 Post by UPTHETOP » Tue May 12, 2009 9:46 am

Well just got back from a trip out west to a mates place and was lucky enough to score a few goats while I was out there helping out.
Just a small story as will be writing one up for Gundy on the trip for his mag.
It s a 7 hr drive west and is long and slow in an old hilux I tell you.

1/ The road in is typical black soil country flat and barron. Quite different to hunting goats as to down south usually no cover and this makes it hard getting in close for a shot.

2/ Well after cutting and branding 400 odd weaners the last day was left for a look down the local prickel bush creek for some goats. It was an early start to the morning.

3/4 /Amazing difference a good wet season can do to this type of country. Dry shot last year and the grassy shot 2 days ago the same fence line.

5/ I stalked into a small mob I could hear in the thick pricle bush, the old knees and albows arnt what they use to be I tell you.
Damn Ive been spotted.

6/ There was no real size to any racks in the group so picked this big black billy for his skin. After crawling on my stomach for 30 metres ( it isnt what it use to be either) and got to within 12 metres and took a quatering away shot.
He went down in short time and I looked through the mob for a smaller kid for the freezer.

7/ Just couldnt get a good shot on one so picked another billy the same size for his long haired white coat. These skins will be used latter to cover some quivers I am going to make up down the track.
The billy turned and the arrow took him strait into the chest which brought him strait to his knees and it was all over.

8/ The mornings hunt was over. Both racks went 27 inches for those that want to know. On the long drive home there was plenty of time to think of good friends and good times. But the aches and pains from a few days hard work has made me relise my young days are over. I guess the older we get we must cherrish the good hunting times.

Cheers Wayno

Congrats Wayno well done! Great photos as usual. The place sure does look nice and green. Those two photos of the same paddock sure do show the contrast the different seasons.

Oh, by the way your gunna end up with smelly quivers.

Good on ya Wayno!!

At least they had the decency to grade that black soil road for you, mate.

Good photos too. 8)

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Good hunting and photography, Wayno! Many happy returns of the day to you!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
