Glenn - How was the Gulf hunt?

#1 Post by Stickbow Hunter » Sat Aug 16, 2003 1:29 pm

Glenn,

I see your back. How was the Gulf, good I hope. Care to fill us in a little and maybe post a photo or two.

It seems you may have timed the trip just right as I believe it is raining up there now.

Thanks Jeff

I would like to say that it is good to be back from the Cape but it's not, the trip was far too short, I can never get enough of being out in the bush, when I finish building my new house I will do a big trip up there.
As far as game went I didn't do any good at all, I really wanted a good scrub bull or mickey bull as they call them up there but the wind didn't do us any favours, everytime we got onto a good bull the wind would blow at our backs. But other than that it was one of the best trips I have ever been on, next time I go up I will be armed with better knowledge which is the best weapon of all.
The best thing to happen to me on the hunt was on the last morning when I followed up a large boar walking down the creek. I followed him for a long way when he got ahead of me in the long grass and the wind did it again and blew back towards the boar. I said to my mate who was following a fair way back that I thought that this a lost cause now and he should go back up the creek and look for another pig while I walk down a bit further but he said that he would stay with me just incase. We had only walked about 50 meters when we came up to a small washout which took a small bend with a log over it, I gave it a long hard look but couldn't see anything there and with the wind still at my back I thought there is no way there would be anything there. Big mistake wouldn't you know it as I walked up the washout and past the log to a likely looking spot up further out the boar came with three big whoofs and a couple of strides he was flat out and headed in my direction a distance of 5 meters which was the only out for him. The got his tusks under the back of my leg under my **** and threw me in the air like a rag doll, he stopped for a second or two and at this stage I was very worried and feeling helpless laying on the ground, I grabbed my bow thinking I would have to fend him off if he was going to have a go at me, that's right I forgot to mention that I was screaming like a shelia also, but fortunatly he ran of as my mate came running over.
Luckily the pig didn't rip me I don't know how he didn't, he put a good tear in my pants and damaged my ego. When we realized I wasn't seriously hurt Mark and I almost had a laughing fit as the whole thing was funny, we took a few photos of my only trophy from this Cape York trip.
It still a bit sore to sit down and stand up but I cant help but smile when ever I think of that pig....Glenn...

Glenn,

ROTFLMAO as they say in the classics!
that's right I forgot to mention that I was screaming like a shelia also
- hahahaa! I can just picture my reaction to being upended  Never been in that situation and in no hurry, either!

Great story, though! Thanks, it should be required reading for anyone contemplating such a trip.

Oh, if you send me the 'tusked2.jpg' piccy, I'll make sure it gets into your post. You can't post pictures that reside on your home pc, they have to be on the internet somewhere. So email it to me at

erron@netspace.net.au

and I'll do the rest.

Thanks again for the story: Great Stuff. You Queenslanders are mad buggers!!!

cheers,

Erron

Glenn,

We all know that it wouldn't have been funny at the time, BUT that time is past

With your stature the boar wouldn't have had to lift his head very far to be up to you rear end hey?

Seriously though, it's good to hear you had a great time and you come away unhurt - sort of!

Please send that photo to Erron as I'm sure we would all enjoy seeing the results of your close encounter.

Thanks for sharing, it sure was good to have a laugh. Bowhuntin' sure is fun ain't it? Jeff

When you finally all get to see the image (hurry up Glenn and post it) you'll understand why I've named it affectionately "Back door boar".

This was one photo session I'm still trying to forget.

Okay, here you go. I've asked Glen if it's okay to post this separately on the Lore & Legend page, as I think it's a great story.

Here they are:

Gee that's a horrible sight. The scratch doesn't look real good either

All I can say is that's as close as you want to get to gettin' ripped.

Those are great shots of the pigs as well. What sort of camera did you use Glenn. Was it a digital type?

I think the story deserves a spot in the Legends sction to Erron. :D

Thanks for sharing the photos. Jeff

Jeff the camera I used was the Panasonic Lumix digital camera, it has a 12x optical zoom lens, I am very pleased with it.
Gundy I think that I was very lucky Mark was there as well and I was not alone because I think that he would have really got stuck into me when I was on the ground. Maybe Mark should have stood back and waited until the pig was finished with me incase he could have got a shot at him, a bit like fishing with live bait.

Philosophical question of the day:

If you're alone in the Outback with an angry pig, does Live Bait scream like a Sheila?

Glenn,

Thanks for the info on the camera. The digitals are improving all the time. Jude's sister returned from overseas recently and she took all her photos with a digital. They looked sensational on the computer. I would like to see the quality of them printed. I believe film is still better in that department but when you see photos like your's on the computer a digital is certainly worth looking into.

I think it was very good that Mark was there as well or things may have ended up very serious. That is one of the reasons I always like to hunt in pairs. Some people frown on it but it sure is great for safety. Obviously you can mess things up on your mate occasionally but I rather have the safety as a lot can go wrong - pig rip you, snake bite, broken limb, cut, etc. Besides when we hunt in pairs we take it in turns stalking the game and I enjoy watching nearly as much as having the stalk myself.

We might just have to tie our Ol' live bait mate Erron up and see what he sounds like hey?

Thanks again for the info on the camera and especially for the story and photos. I'm sure you can see we all really enjoyed them. Jeff

- mate, you better not be packing your glass-backed bow is all I can say!

Papabear, women and mirrors don't lie, it's just distortion caused by a trick of the light, don't you know?

That hennypenny just 'aint doing her job around here,

Why I .... oh, never mind!

You just cut and paste the text you want quoted, then select it with the mouse, then click on the "Quote" box above your edit box.

Easy peasy,

Okay, try this:

1) cut and paste the quote into your post.
2) position the cursor at the beginning of the quote.
3) press the Quote button.
4) position the cursor at the end of the quote.
5) press the Quote button.

that should do it :P
