Murrumbidgee Boat Trip

#1 Post by memo » Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:06 pm

Just came back from a two day trip, fishing down the Murrumbidgee River with two mates. It was my first time out & about for a fair while so it was just great to get out there with some mates. Was a fishing trip, but took the recurve along in case someting caught my eye.
We caught five Trout Cod and one carp. Most of the Trout cod were small, But Dave caught a beauty of around 55cm.
Found some goats on the river flats and had a sneak but couldn't quite get close enough, We had to make it a fair way downstream to our pickup point, so I didn't hunt them for too long, as we had to keep moving. Just happy to see them and get some photos, and know where they are for the next trip.
This time was more of a scouting trip, so we'll see how we go next time

Memo

It sounds like you had a great trip. I've never caught a trout cod. I've never even seen one. Are they protected?

There's that something special about a trip by river. It's somehow primative and basic, and it seems "right" for some strange reason. The only thing better would be to paddle canoes rather than take a noisy outboard powered dingy. You would see more game on the banks too IMO.

Obviously you were travelling through crown land or state forest. What are the legalities regarding this sort of hunting? I'm not trying to pick holes in you here mate. I'm just curious, because it sounds like something I'd like to try one day.

What sort of camping gear did you take? How much river did you cover in the two days?

Great photos Memo!!

Mick

Great stuff mate

You have got to love those trout cod. We have a section of the river near here that is closed to fishing and is stocked with them. It has made a bit of a diff' to the number of trout cod caught in other areas of the river.

We need to find a river that runs through a Vic State Forest with some goats and pigs so we can have a get-together and a hunt

Good stuff Memo.

Looks like we are neighbours... I'm in Narrandera these days. :D

I've been thinking about a canoe trip from here to Balranald... I did it when I was about 17 with a mate, and I'd like to try it again to see what's changed.

Gotta love the Murrumbidgee!

Wow! Thanks for the replies fellas.
Yes Mick, the Trout Cod are protected, so they were all released. They have been making a comeback and it is great to see. The Trout Cod are apparently voracious feeders and I'd beleive it after the amount of running to the rods we did all night. After catching only one Carp, we think that the trout cod are giving them a hiding, as years ago you would expect to catch a few with bait. Most other people in the area agree this is happening, and its great.
There is no state forest, along this stretch of the river its all private property we were on. I'm not 100%, but I don't think you can hunt on crown land in NSW? but now with the game council, you can access state forest. None along this part of the 'Bidgee that I know of, need to pore over more maps :) Good Idea Jindy, could be one for the next Ozbow hunt
Yeah, Canoes would have been nice, but we took too much stuff
We were discussing how to streamline the operation for the next journey.
Littlefeather and Bowdonkey, heres a couple more;

It would seem it certainly was a great time. Some nice looking country with some great camping spots no doubt. You did seem to take a lot of gear. :D

Yes we did take a bit
The huge thing in the second boat was Dave's swag that I christened
"The Behemoth" It was a massive queen size swag, about 5ft wide and rolled up to about 2ft around  Next time we decided the biggest space saver would be taking a tent for us all and sleeping bags/mats rather than a swag each.

Great pics mate really good to see some of us getting a chance to get out a bit
There is something about camping next to a river and by the looks you would have had some nice spots to light a campfire .
cheers
