Who Here Actually Hunts?

#1 Post by coach » Tue Sep 27, 2005 8:34 pm

I have noticed that there arent many pics etc of what people have hunted .
How many of you do actually hunt ? Or are most of you caught up in the "romance" of Trad ?

I've never fired an arrow of any description at a live animal.
It's not that I think it's unhumane or that its better if the butcher slaughters them for me.
It's just that it's too early, its cold out and I don't wanna go. (Ron White)

Nice call Coach! Sitting around is definitely not my idea of bowhunting. I do like to make a lot of my own stuff, though the if it ain't practical then it is inherently ugly to me. (If you know what I mean)

One reason for the lack of pics mate is definitely the lack of hunting being done. If I lived on a game covered property like some people (  ) I'd be out there every day.........

I hunt as often as i can but the lack of property's and the lack of game don't help...I also hunt with a compound so here is not the place to display any game taken...This weekend will be my first hunt using trad gear so it will be interesting..

Coach

If you call bowhunting rabbits hunting, I go two or three times a week minimum. I bag my fair share of rabbits and the odd fox. I usually go up pig hunting in north western NSW once a year. I used to hunt red and fallow deer regularly before their numbers were decimated by a bloody idiot rifle shooter my mate introduced to the property. I still go there once or twice a year to see how the red deer herd is faring. Many is the time I've been within twenty yards of good reds, I rarely even consider a shot. I'm too enthralled to even consider it.

Yes, I am caught up in the romance of traditional bowhunting, but to me, the romance would soon wane without constant hunting expeditions. I love to hunt. I don't have to be successful in order to enjoy it.

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

I got into the longbow abouts 5 months ago .
I have not hunted with a bow yet .
I used to hunt with rifle abouts 20 years ago and was really into it for years loading my own bullets .
and used to love going to a new location and stalking after game .
I started to hunt doves and pigeons for years with a twenty two single shot in Adelaide I mostly got rabbits pigeons ducks crows .

in the Last 5 months I logged or i shot 11,100 arrows the last of those
5,600 were from my 67lbs longbow .

I had this idea of shooting 20,000. before going hunting .
but I found that it will take a long time to shoot that many .

I just brought a bitzenburger archery fletching jig.
and repaired all my carbon arrows and put feathers on them .
and they shoot better .

I just made my first wooden arrows for my Longbow with 5 inch feathers .and like the way they shoot a lot better than the carbons they hit the target much harder .
and they feel more natural on my longbow .

and all so they seem to be more stable in the air and move fast .
I am never going back to carbons .

Anny way long story short I have been hunting the web and talking to people because I live in the center of Sydney and i got to figure out where to go hunting .

I got a Friend who lives close to Yass and I am currently trying to organize a trip up to his place .

I am all so curios abouts what the Game Council New South Wales mean by 'declared' public land
as I want to check out where I can hunt and the more I read the more confused I become .

Ho yea i forgot to say .when i started with the Longbow i had no confidence with it and whanted to practice a lot .

and because of the very intens practice i have been doing .
I feel confident and comftarble up to 15 meters .
arounde this distance and specialy arounde 10 meters I feel
as comftarble as i woulde with a 22 at 40 meters with open sights .

at 5 meters I am even better .

what I am tring to say with this is that at least I got my foot in the door .
5 to 10 to up to 15 meters .

I just got this funny feeling its going to take abouts 20,000.
shots more to stretch it out to maybe 18 to 20 meters .

while we are on the subject .does Anny body know some place close to Sydney that people can go hunting ?
what are the License regulations for deer ?
are there state forest that can be hunted .
I would like to go to a place and hunt and go with peace of mind
that I can hunt there rain shine Anny weather without depending on
some one Else's permission .some where like a state Forrest or public land that you are aloud to hunt .
we live in Australia a perfect place for it .
one of the most unpopulated places on earth .
if you catch a plane you see a Little city and then Horus and hours of mostly barren land .
I got to admit without giving to much away that I don't have a car .
because in the center of Sydney you don't need it you would spend half of you're life looking for a parking spot .
with all honesty I need a place close or that can be reached by train or bus .

plus I got to get myself a compass so as I don't end up on the news .
man lost in forrest for 5 days the chanel seven helicopter is searching.

Axe,
If makes any difference I aways enjoy looking at your photos. I may not speak for everyone, but I hope you decide to post some more, especially with that new bow. Thanks

You wouldn't be an accountant, by any chance would you? You sure love figures and statistics. :D There's nothing wrong with that mate, it's just an observation. No offence. 8)

Coach

I'll post a lot more pictures when I finally buy my digital camera. I don't often take my current 35mm SLR camera when I go hunting. For a start, it's too bulky and heavy and secondly, you've got to wait until the whole roll is used up before getting them developed. After the photos are developed, then scanned, then reduced in size in order to be posted, the quality is pathetic.

People don't want to read about my hunting exploits without photos. That's why I don't post many articles in the Hunting and Fishing forum. Besides, I'm not exactly the worlds best hunter, so my achievements aren't particularly impressive. I mainly hunt rabbits and I doubt whether members are very excited about what could be described as mundane rabbit hunting. It's certainly not mundane for me though. I live for it.

I will try to post more material in future. I take your point.

Mick S,
Have you ever looked at the option of when you get you film processed, instead of getting prints, get them to scan and burn the images to disk? I was doing that for 6 months or so before I got my D SLR. It cost me the same as getting prints and I could then print out my own at home.

The other advantage is you only print the good ones and you don't end up with a pile of duds that won't ever get looked at again.

Buford

ps. make sure they scan them at a minimum of 100dpi (preferably 300dpi) otherwise you won't be able to enlarge them very far, if at all.

Matt

I didn't even know it was possible to have 35mm photos burned straight to a disc. I've never even heard about it.

I'll make some enquiries next time I take a roll in to get photos developed. I might even take prints and a disc, if it's possible.

Thanks for the info mate. I'll be buying the digital camera soon, just as soon as I've paid off (out of my pocket money allowance  ) all the bows I've been buying. :D

Coach

Good thread mate!!!! I like it when you make us think. 8)

consider yourself signed up as the official trash publicity officer for the up comming epic adventure starring butchoman, micc and feral dave. Micc will be the one in hot pink bike pants , ill be the whippet out front leading them out , actually you will probably here them complaining about the heat, flies and sore bums from down your way.
