A week in the gulf.

#1 Post by rodlonq » Thu Oct 08, 2015 2:59 pm

Spent a week up in the Gulf of Carpenteria a while ago with some new mates Trevor, Carl and Lee. it was a great trip even if the country is very dry due to consecutive years of drought. The fishing was great and the hunting was even better with large numbers of pigs on or near the scattered water sources. The boars in this country are particularly cranky with 2 of the 3 boars I shot charging several times before being dispatched.

This fella was sleeping in the grass with his back facing me when I spotted him from about 5 m. The shot looked real good but he wasn't happy.

A good feed of curried goat from the camp oven hit the spot on a cold night.

I stalked this boar around a waterhole avoiding many other pigs for about 2 hours. Finally it walked up a pad straight towards me and noticed me about 6 m out. After eternity of standing still in front of him the wind changed and he shot off sideways, by the time he'd taken 4 steps an arrow had found its mark and he expired shortly after.

Caught many nice fish like this.

I didn't get onto a big one like Carl and Lee did, not for lack of trying though.

These fellas were in constant attendance around the fishing spot, I don't think I even blinked when the tide was in and the "beach" was only about 6 feet wide.

This boar was lying in a wallow and I stalked into the mob to get a shot at him from a high bank. After a short struggle he submerged and I thought he was done. I walked across to Trevor who was filming it all and Trevor yell out "you'd better turn around and shoot that pig again" he was only about 4 m behind me and after I fended him off he went for Trevor and his tripod.

Trevor, Lee Carl and myself. I never thought I'd team up with a crew of blokes I'd only met online, but I am sure glad I did. It was a great trip and I'm sure we'll get together again in the future.

Thanks for looking. Cheers... Rod

Half your luck, what a result Rod! That would have been a great trip, and taking pigs with the trad gear is always special.

Rod the team photo looks like a wild bunch of misfits for shore. Congratulations on getting some game with the new bow, no looking back now.

Great to see your post of the trip Rod. I was so lucky to of had my first Boar charge and it was with you! ha ha.
The whole of us had the best time up there and that Goat Curry went down a treat with all of us.
The Camp was ruff but we coped well in such harsh conditions.I had the best time hunting with you Rod and I admired how you could get those Gulf Boars fired up so well. LOL!
Sorry to hear about the Boar that attacked your cruiser but you had the last laugh.

WARNING !
Don't camp in the same camp as Rod because his snoring is unreal.
Captain.

Awesome!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
