The Unexpected Treasure

#1 Post by Jack Spinks » Sat May 09, 2015 10:25 am

Myself and my buddy John went out for a whistle not far from his home town in Balranald NSW, we had been to this property a few times and each time have taken home a fox or two so our hopes were high. we crested the first creek bank and I instantly had the feeling this was ideal for a whistle, sure enough after whistling for a minute of so I caught movement out the left side of screen. I motioned to John something was coming in and in no time I was yelling at this big tom to stop as he came to a halt at my feet. Now this is where it became tricky, john was a few metres to my left pressed up against a tree and whilst this cat was staring straight at me no more then a step away an arrow flew clean through the cat taking him through the chest. What an intense few moments I tell ya.. John had taken his first cat so the atmosphere was pumping.

we continued on a few bends and whistled at each point with nothing much showing, one bend looked promising covered in gum tree suckers and dead branches. I was in the bottom of the creek under the roots of an old dead tree with a wall of suckers no more then 25m in front of me. I had a funny feeling if anything came in it would be from there. sure enough after a lengthy whistle I noticed a good fox poke his head through the suckers and work his way down the creek bank, at 18m he was trying to wind me so I slowly lifted my bow and followed him until his view was obstructed by a fallen tree, that's when I drew, held and released. The arrow covered the distance in no time and dropped the fox on the spot, what a shot I couldn't believe I had pulled off considering a shoulder injury the week before. We took some photos and continued along the creek trying our luck for a few more, but we stumbled across some water and a heap of pig sign.

knowing there are a few pigs about I mentioned to john to keep an eye out especially under all the bushes and trees in view, the pig **** got thicker and the pads deeper and I knew we would run into some sooner or later. Sure enough we spooked some suckers and a young sow from some lignum which took off into some really thick country, not sure how but John and I got separated and I found myself watching a sucker play around under a bush hoping a boar would be about. I faintly heard a few ducks going about there business so I headed in the direction hoping there was some water nearby. As I came over the top of the dry creek bank a wall of ducks took off from the waterhole making a far old racket scaring who knows what, but too my surprise there was nothing in the water. Until I had a second look and noticed a big old set of buts half submerged in the mud. "holy **** a boar" I began to shake and raced down the bank dropping the pack as I went, I knew with the wind I didn't have much time or where John was being a risk of spooking him. I quietly made it to 25m and tried to go around this small water hole but the wind wouldn't have it, so at 25m across the water half submerged and quartering away I took my time and took the shot. "thwack" then a squeal then all went silent a few seconds later. The arrow flew true hitting the offside shoulder, the boar tried to make it up the bank but succumbed to the lethality of the well placed arrow shortly after. the blood trail was evident and the boar grew in size as I approached him, my first mature boar weighing about 95kg he was as fat as mud. I couldn't have been happier!! after all the work I've done for a boar it all came together..

Awesome!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
