What do you Take on a Bow Hunting Trip?

#1 Post by Tonylange » Mon Jan 05, 2015 9:31 pm

I'm creating this topic as i'd like to know more about and share what i take on a trip. I also thought it would make a good place to discuss ideas and share some knowledge on whats needed or good/easy to take on Bowhunting trips.

I'm aware that there are many examples of setups and not all will be useful for everyone. Just remember everyone posting on here has there reasons for packing the way they do and we're not here to tell them different.
To help clean up the responses i suggest we group them in the following order:

1) Day Hunt
2) 2 Day Hunt
3) 3 Day +

A) Back Pack Hunt
B) Basecamp Hunt(Lodges and Shearer sheds included)
C) Car, Canoe, ATV, Bike, Etc Vehicle Hunt(i.e using the truck to get around the property)

I) Spring or (Hot Days with good Rainfall and high Humidity)
II) Summer or (Dry Climate, Low humidity and scorching heat)
III) Autumn or (Cold Nights, Winds and Rain)
IV)Winter or (Freezing Temps, Icy winds or Possible Snow)

So An example would be: (One Of my trips)

Day Hunt, Basecamp, Spring.
Gear list:
First aid kit (with snake bandage)
1ltr of water (For each time i went out chasing bunnies)
Toelke Whip Longbow & Thunderhorn 6 arrow bow quiver
6 Woods with screw on Blunts
Binos

Easy as that, Extra notes and discussion is highly encouraged and Enjoyable.
P.s i came back empty handed :(

Regards Anthony.

1), C), II)

A recent bunny hunt at a property just down the road.

Gear list:

Toelke Whip with Eagles Flight bow quiver.
4 Easton .500 Powerflight arrows - 2 with Montec small game heads & 2 with Snuffer broadheads (hopefully for foxes).
1 litre of water carried in a canteen on my belt.
Results - Got wet, it rained. Only around 4 shots at rabbits. All close, but no cigar. Some fur on one blunt. Not many bunnies about and no foxes seen. Still it was an enjoyable day.
There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Good To see you still enjoyed it Mick, Maybe we should start packing Raincoats :P.

How's the Toelke Treating you?
Furthermore what did you think about the format?, was it easy to chuck up a reply to my original post?

The Whip is a fantastic bow. This is my second one. I had to reduce my draw weight due to a shoulder injury and old age. It's only 45# but it shoots the same trajectory as my 51# Mohawk with the same arrow.

The format concept is good. It did my head in, the first time I read it, but it does make perfect sense. It might be easier to simply write in each of the 3 categories rather then the prefixes, for example.

Day trip
Car
Summer

The above might be easier to remember and quicker to type.

I doubt if I'll ever tire of hunting bunnies. It's something I've done all of my life. The challenge never diminishes.

Haha yeah true, i'll change that feature.
And yeah Bunnies are a great challenge, the only propety i have access to has really flighty ones that run at like 60m+ so getting close even camo'ed up is really hard. But at 65# with a 700gn arrow and 180fps if i hit one at any range it's not getting back up so i'm very comfortable taking long shots on them. Almost hit one at 70mtrs as it ran up the hill the other day.

End of summer/summer
Day hunt from base camp

I take a three litre bladder (pretty hot up here, dont like being caught short), first aid kit, extra snake bite bandages, small torch (been caught out twice before, neither my fault), snacks, lollies, hand held 2 way. Most of my hunts are from a base camp, would love to do a three or four day backpack hunt, one day soon. Oh and bow, 5 arrows, knife and gps, spare compass in bag with map. I should take a plb or spot, that would be super smart.

Maybe in winter swap out the 3 ltr for a 2.
