The things you see when you aint got your bow.

#1 Post by Tommo » Tue Jul 30, 2013 9:50 am

Spent a day on a very nice dorado river last week. Was invited to fish there for the day and check it out with a few to guiding anglers on it.
Saw a heap of dorado which was great but the thing that really excited me was the amount of what looked like small pig tracks.
Rounding a bend in the river I came across a lone animal feeding on the edge. My first sighting of a live white lipped peccary. They are normally a group animal I am told so this was a bit weird anyway got in under fifteen metres and took a few photos. Only had the wide angle lens with me so these are well and truly cropped down but anyway was good to get the drop on him in one form at least.

At this point it winded me or heard the shutter going off and got all the hackles up. All the locals tell me that they are very aggressive especially when in a group and will attack and defend their young etc. This one hung around till I asked him what time it was and then he just toddled off.

As I only had a six weight fly rod with me there was no shot on offer. Made up for that by catching at least one nice fish for the day

Great shots and what a nice fish! Are they any good to eat as well as being a topnotch sporting fish?

What a shame you didn't have ya bow with you. I'm sure you and Ol' Matchsticks would have made short work of him.

Once again that is one nice fish.

how does the Peccary compare in size to our feral pig? I think they are a little smaller?

They are edible but not great a much better sportfish than table fish.

Believe so Rod though never tried one. One day soon maybe

Yes they are smaller 30-40 kilo or so would max them out I believe.

Everyone I have spoke too says to take care when they are in a group as they can get very aggressive and won't always run if feeling threatened. The locals call them 'majano' (mah-har-no) They do have some tusk short, sharp, straight and thick. They are preyed on by puma, jaguars and potenially me

Look a bit like a cross between our ferals and a Javellina.

They are related to the collered peccary or javalina which is native to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona in the U.S. and Mexico where the white lipped peccary also ranges. I believe they have musk glands like the javalina so be careful if you kill one when skinning or you will stink to high heaven,LOL.

The collared peccary are here too though am yet to sight one in the wild.

Can you tell me where the musk glands are located?

On the javalina they are just under the skin on the back near the neck. Do not know where they are on the white lipped.
