Jeff and I went out last weekend for a hunt.
The first afternoon I wandered off for a walk and within minutes I had spotted a fox but unfortunately he too had me pegged and took off at double time. Soon after a couple of Fallow stags were having a battle across a small gorge. I stood and watched as they fought away from me. Jeff and I had a go at Rattling some antlers later in the trip but had no success.
I reached the bottom of the valley without sighting any pigs so I headed up the creek with the wind at my face. I had chosen the creek as it has been quite dry down this way so thought game may be near the water sources. Well nothing showed up on the creek and light was beginning to wane.
Making my way to a track that is an easier way out of the valley I spotted a small group of pigs on a hill side and made a b- line in their direction in the hope of getting in position for a shot before light was gone. Well as it turns out I didn't have to go that far as I spotted a pigs back in the Kangaroo grass beside the track I was walking on and got into 5 meters. The pig was feeding and moved forward exposing his vitals between the stands of grass signaling to me to release. He ran 20 meters before bailing up and expiring.

Now I didn't have my back pack on that contained my camera and knife so I covered the boar up and left him with the intention of returning the following morning. Well after a fitful night sleep I walked back over to the boars hoping nothing had been at him the night before. I also took my Kelpie for a wander in case I had any trouble locating where I had covered him.
As Roy and I approached where the boar was I could see that Roy could smell him but I looked down and spotted red fur. Well Roy was about to wake this imposter so I quickly nocked an arrow and sent it into his boiler room. Well to say all hell broke loose would be an under statement, The pig turned out to be a reasonable boar and I discovered that my tough Kelpie is not that tough at all as he took off faster than the boar and didn't return for 15 minutes . The boar expired quickly and I found I had 2 good boars withing 5 meters of each other .

Well to top that off the next day I awoke to find my bow had let go. I was hoping to take the Black Swan to the Cape in 3 months time so I am glad it happened here rather than there. Any way I may have time to whip up a set of limbs for it before I go.

Thanks Macca. Arrows are Carbon express 350's with Outback supreme single bevel broadheads and 100 grain brass insert. Bow was 65#

Congrats on ya boars Steve. That first one is rather nuggety too!

Is that glass or carbon on the limb? It seems odd that it split length wise like that without it showing a split along the edge unless it did the other side?

Thanks Jeff, yes there is a split on the side too. It is glass on the belly and carbon on the back. Cheers Steve

If it wasn't for the unfortunate luck with the bow would have been a great hunt.But as you say better happen now then have it happen on the trip of a life time .

Yes the glass peeled off the lamination. The lams are still stuck.

Yep, I bought another bow last week as the backup.

Thanks Rob, the bow was 3rd hand in Australia and I don't know if it was bought new from the States so I can't complain. New limbs are a bit over priced from Black Swan and I reckon I will enjoy the job of making new ones. Cheers Steve

I shot a little boar for meat earlier in the day and then in the arvo before dark we went for another look.
The wind blew it on a mob of brindle pigs and then I spotted a lone pig down in the grasses.
After a quiet stalk I was within 5 metres and had only a front on shot available.At that range the boar was going to detect me at any moment.
I have hit shoulder bones before so this time I aimed tighter in towards the neck.The arrow came out down near its back leg going diagonally through it.
The boar ran about 60 metres till I lost sight of it.
I ran after it to see where it would appear on the other side of a gully when i noticed some grass moving.And there he was,all over in 5 seconds

Steve you need to get a camera with a bigger screen mate so i can see the pics on them better
That brindle one you got is a mean looking boar isnt he.Well the other one is too .

Yeah, it is a bit hard to see on my camera screen. Thats why Roy did the bolt I suppose .

Shame about the bow Steve, lucky your a bit handy when it comes to making bows. What are the marks on the finish on the limb?

Thanks Hazard. I will have another look at the bow but probably just the crappy finish that they have. I have hunted in the rain with it and was meaning to put a better finish on as it was lacking. Oh well it is gone now. Cheers Steve

Great hunting fellas, nice pigs there. Shame about the Swan Steve but I'm sure you'll make a couple of better stes of limbs for your Cape trip.
