Longbow Steve gets first fox

#1 Post by Jeffro » Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:24 am

Just got back from a trip out to the hills and we did a bit of fox whistling.
I missed 2 sitters because I had the whistle in my mouth when taking the shot.I did not want the string to clip the whistle so I held the string away from my mouth a bit and both shots went to the right.
Then steve got this one.He can explain how it went down.

A few scenery photos

I took a pig out of this mob and deliberately didnt shoot this big one cause I thought it was a sow.
It wasnt until they took off that I could tell it was a boar

Thanks for putting the pictures up Jeff. Looks like I was dancing a jig in those first two photos  .
Here is a quick story of how the fox went down. I was sitting in front of the log pictured above, Jeff was behind with the whistle and Jeff's Mrs was at the other end of the log  . Jeff blew the hand made tin whistle and immediately got the attention of 2 nearby Fox. The fox stayed at about 80 meters until Jeff blew an ultra distressed call which proved to much for the young dog fox who thought he was missing out on a meal. The fox stopped at about 8 meters watching. I had the bow up already and brought it back to full draw when the arrow came off the rest  . I wrestled it on while remaining at full draw and released the arrow hitting the fox behind the right front shoulder and exiting just left of his rear end. He gave a little leap in the air and bit the arrow in half but went no where  . I was happy to get one as I have whistled in or had Jeff whistle in about 6 fox that I have either shot left right or hi and low in the last 3 years. Perry the bow is an Osage selfbow 60# @28 63" ntn. The arrows are Douglass Fir with self nocks and Outback traditional heads weighing in at 570 gr
I have some more pics to add to this thread one being a selfbow shot boar :surprised:  but wont have them up for a day or so.
Thanks all for the congrats. Thanks Jeff for helping me reach a trad goal. Cheers Steve

well done both of you.......arrow slipping off, Steve. Hey it was your day. Those young foxes take a while to get clued in. Love chasing foxes and feral cats, probably more than anything else. I know Jeffro has a passion for re educating feral cats.

Here are some more pics of our weekend away.
I was walking down a creek line and had not long flushed some Fallow does from their bed when a 60-70 Kilo Boar came wandering on a collision course with me. I was pretty excited and confident the Osage selfbow would do the job but at about 20 meters the wind turned and alerted the boar to my presence and he took off. No more than a minute later a micro boar stepped up for the honor of first pig with a selfbow so I wasn't going to complain. At first I thought I must have missed but he soon got the wobbly boot and fell over not more than 5 meters from where shot. The shot had passed completely through.

I came across numerous pigs but had imposed a limit of 10 meters on the selfbow due to the lower efficiency so practiced getting as close as possible a few times. I also stalked in to easy compound bow range on 3 Fallow bucks and snapped off some pictures. I was presented with a broadside opportunity on the largest buck so hopefully when the season opens this year Jeff and I can be successful.

On the last evening I took the Black Swan out and came across an adult pig and put it down with one arrow.

One of the more memorable hunts I have been on and found that despite the heat of summer it was well worth getting out there. Thanks Steve

Steve, lucky you getting in all this Hunting - I reckon you have at least 3 times the chance of taking a Fallow Deer as I have - I've seen the same Fallow Deer 3 times on the Property I Hunt in the Nothern New England. He's beat me every time  which isn't too Hard  I wish you every success with it.
