New property, New friend
About a year ago I met a gentleman through work and we got to talking about fishing and hunting. I was invited a few weeks ago to accompany Emery and his Grandson to a property that they have access to for a weekend of fishing and hunting.
We arrived at the property just before lunch and quickly unpacked and head to the river to escape the hottest part of the day. The only fish that came to shore were Carp but they are fun to fight.
The afternoon came along and Emery and grandson took me to a part of the property they had not been to for a bit of an explore. We reached the top of a hill and spotted some goats feeding halfway down the other side. I was sent into bat first as I was shooting a bow but the country was very open so I didn't hold much hope of a successful stalk. I was also armed with the Osage selfbow so knew I had to get into 10 meters for a guaranteed kill so I humored them and began closing the gap. I was also told by Emery that I wasn't allowed to leave the property until my esky was full of meat .
I had chosen my target, the larger of two yearling goats and slowly moved directly toward it with no cover other than the steep rocky hill behind me and my camo gear. It took about 10 minutes to get in to 15 meters from about 100 meters off, stopping whenever the goats were facing my way. I managed to close the gap further to 10 meters and raised my bow already sporting one of my fancy self nocked Oregon shafts and sent an arrow on it's way.

Re: New property, New friend
The shot was good and I had downed my first selfbow animal on the bows first shot at game and with an audience no less . Emery and Anthony were impressed by the stalk and the fact that no other game had moved from the area so I think the seed has been planted for a couple of future bow hunters . I carried the goat up to where they were and had Emery take a photo of me with the young billy.
This is Emery my new friend, let me know how old you think he is.

Well done Steve,Can't help but notice in the photo of Emery with his goat
that the hills in the background have a bit of angle and altitude to them.

Thanks Matt, yes if you look at my face it is quite red from carrying the extra 20 kgs back up to the guys. It was also 30 degrees + out there. Very steep country indeed. Cheers Stevematt61 wrote:Well done Steve,Can't help but notice in the photo of Emery with his goat

Great stuff Steve! Nothing better than getting an animal with your own endeavours. Great photos and wouldnt like to guess at Emery's age but think he might be a little older than me! Probably a bit fitter too judging by the surrounding countryside!

Great time and great write-up, Steve. I'm positive that time fishing or hunting with friends is time added to your allotted span, not deducted from it. Looks like you've made a friend for life there.
Cheers, T.

Wow it sure looks to be a beautiful place and that is some cabin! I will have a guess at Emery's age and say very late seventies to early eighties.

Hi Steve,
Well done mate, a top achievement in those mountains and in that sort of cover...! You probably started your stalk not expecting to get as close as you did... Great job..!
Other than Carp, is there any other species to be caught....? It looks like a nice river...
Cheers Guy

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is no where as important as being able to place it in the correct spot....!

Re: New property, New friend
Thanks Guy, yes I wasn't expecting the stalk to be successful. In the river there is Cod, Yellow Belly, Trout, Silver Perch I think. Emery almost met his match on a 4 kilo Cod last summer He has also been broken off numerous time by some big fish. The river is stocked with fingerlings every year on the property funded by those who visit. SteveGuy Layton wrote:Hi Steve,

He reminds me a lot of a fellow who lives near me and is of the same caliber as Emery and walks his dog around a rather large block. A very approachable fellow and a very gently nature. This bloke puts most people half his age to shame.

Re: New property, New friend
I visited Emery on monday and found out that he rolled his 4wd in heavy rain returning from a fishing club meeting. The roof was apparently caved in on the front half and the vehicle landed back on it's wheels. Emery folded his seat back and climbed out the window . He received a negligent driving charge from the police.
He told me this story and then was straight into talking to me about going hunting . I am in awe . Steve

Re: New property, New friend
RARE genes! I have my 90 year old mother staying with us at the moment, and only 5 weeks ago she had a bit chunk of her bowel removed due to bowel cancer. To look at her now one wouldn't even know she has had a recent op. let alone such a major one .Emery is a living legend in my books.
