A boat, some fish and a pig.

#1 Post by otis.drum » Wed Nov 16, 2011 9:40 pm

so i have had a bit going on of late. a change in role and shift roster (much less time off), a new (to me) boat and very little time to make bows or hunt.

the other day i got a msg on here asking if i was still alive, and whilst i have been popping in from time to time for a quick read, i thought i should contribute something.

so first of all, we bought a new boat. it's a smuggler 5900 side consol powered by a turbo diesel Steyr and mercruiser leg.

we use a mixed fishing approach of bait, flicking, trolling etc, but of late we have been having fun with the tuna and macs smashing bait balls of the western cape.

and whilst i haven't had time to make any bows or even pic one up, i found myself at the end of the year with the wet season already started and having not been for a hunt for the year. so i decided to put the dogs rifle and wife in the car and head out to a trusty little spot, a short walk from the car, that i have had good success at for the last couple of years.... the dogs came for exersice and the wife to hold them, not for the hunt.....

driving out it was obvious no cars had been in there for the season and i was quietly confident of seeing one. went for the three km walk to my spot and a large black boar jumped up out of the soak and bolted. nice little running shot and he was dowm. anna let the dogs off and they sniffed it out, barked at the dead pig and then dragged it around for 15 minutes until hot and bothered and stopped.

nice big black boar with a little colour under his belly. in excellent condition and carrying a heap of weight. i'd say around the 80-85kg mark (i had a good time trying to get him up onto the log). grabbed the tusks out and they came in spot on 28 D points.

am really keen to get back into the bows and hunting and would really like to move to primitive hunting if i can get the time... see how i go.

hope you enjoy the pics and quick description.

thanks

Otis.

G'day Otis,

It's good to see your photos! What kind of artillery do you employ there?

Cheers,

Ben

It may be over 30 years since I stomped around the top end but I still am overcome with longing whenever I see great shots such as yousr from up there. Great fishing up there hey. As Jeff says, also time to break out the bows and fling a few arrows. Thanks for posting the shots.

MATE thanks so much for that we all had a good look at them.I love the one of him sitting on the lap the face says(I dont have to get off do I ).They are a special breed thats for sure, but all dog owners say that about their chosen breed.
I am checking the dog rescue pages almost daily as I would like to get one 1-2 years old if possible.
Cheers KIM

i almost sent you a message asking if you were still alive a couple of weeks ago.
yes that creek is a good one hey andy!

good to see some pics from up there again.

let me know how you go with your primitive gear. i've got some brigalow staves drying now.......some where in there is a bow.

hey Clinton, yeah still here.

have you had a go at or any success making bows? how about some hunting down your way? been getting anything.

we are looking at moving again (within weipa) and i was going through some stuff when i found a bucket with a few bits of glass and some heads i was playing with and thought i might break a few more piece in the attempt to get 10 or so arrow heads. might even do a spear head and try stab me a piggy.

hunting........andy will chime in with a thread about last week.

haven't made any bows as of yet collected more staves more than anything. figure i may need a few before i get one that shoots! LOL
i've gone about it a bit backwards. i know how to knap and make arrows, now for a selfbow with natural string......

yes, that natural string is a tricky one for me. i'm not sure how i will go about that yet. i want something that will handle the strains of drawing back a 60-65lb bow.
