NT Adventure 1 of 2(take 2 )

#1 Post by John Valery » Wed Oct 26, 2011 6:41 pm

Bent Stick, my hubby John Valery and I have just got back from our road trip to the Northern Territory. What a trip of firsts for me. In the weeks hunting and fishing, I managed my first Barra, and first pigs. The boys didn’t do too badly either.
We checked out a couple of new hunting properties that hubby had lined up through some friends of his in the territory. The first off the bat was “Woody” near Port Keats, S/W of Darwin. While not many pigs were sighted (they had been hit pretty hard here), the fishing, camping and bush in this area was spectacular. I managed 11 barra from the Billabongs and nearby beach. I’d never fished with lures before, so it was a bit of a buzz for me. This was to be the relaxing part of the trip.

The second camp was near the “Bark Hut” a fair bit closer to Darwin on a private cattle station. The manager of the place stated “I won’t make too many promises, but I should be able to show you guys some pigs”. Talk about the understatement of the year. We must have seen close to 100 pigs (no exaggeration) in his tour of the area we were to hunt over the next few days. I put a stalk on a mob of pigs that day, and once again, it didn’t pan out (after 2 years of trying for a pig, I was getting convinced that I would never get one). The manager was away for the next few days and we were left to ourselves. We put a walk in the next day through a creek system that we were told might be worth a look. John and I started at one end, while Bent Stick and Ben (hubby’s NT contact we’d convinced to give the bows a try) started at the other with plans to meet in the middle. We bumped 1 boar out of his bed with no shot offered. The other guys did manage a couple of opportunities at their end, but nothing recovered. It seemed all very familiar the way my luck was going.
Day 3 on this place we checked out another creek. It was like someone flicked a switch. This creek twisted and turned on itself with a pig on every bend it seemed. I finally managed to ground my first pig, and it was a respectable boar at that (the monkey is finally of my back). Bent Stick managed to take a nice spotty boar soon after.
Day 4 was more of the same. We split up again with Bent Stick and Ben working a stretch of the same creek, while John and I drove up another couple of clicks to give them a bit of room. I managed another good boar and a nice little sow. Johnny got greedy and floored 3 boars in a couple of hours. What a place.
All too soon time was up and it was time to head home. The only silver lining was that Hubby got a phone call about a job opportunity in Darwin, so it looks like we’ll be up there for a couple of years soon enough. Look out then piggies.

Shooters get to 50m to shoot, but only a hunter gets inside 20m to hunt.

Thanks for posting your hunt up again after it was lost when the site went down; greatly appreciated.

Congrats Karen on your first pig and what a pig at that!!! Congrats on your barra also and to John as well on his boars. It must have been great finding a place that offered so many shot opportunities and good pigs at that.

Good to see these again.
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Good stuff! My partner and I both dig the second shot with the pig. The barra is a good one too.

Barra and Boars.......... Its like pees and carrots....!!!

Well done...

Cheers Guy
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is no where as important as being able to place it in the correct spot....!
