Recovery after shoulder surgery

#1 Post by Bill » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:15 am

Hi to all, I'm wondering as to how many of you have had shoulder surgery, (mine was to my drawing arm, not from over drawing but due to a dislocation of the shoulder), how long did it take for you to recover with physio and get rid of that pinching pain in the upper part of your shoulder.

Hi Bill,

It's not surgery, but I came off mt bicycle a few years back and badly mauled my shoulder and elbow on my bow arm. One of the things I had to suffer was the pinching pain. It took about 3 months for me to get back to drawing a bow properly but I made sure I got my physio's go ahead first.

People heal at their own rate so I would make sure that your doctor said it was ok before hand. If you jump in too soon you might give yourself a permanent injury you'd regret.

As a side note, I still get that pain every now and again. It is caused by my first rib rising and pinching the nerve. A 5 minute physio visit takes care of it.

Good luck with your healing and I hope you are shooting soon.

Richard.

Hi to all,
and to all that have called with your thoughts wishing me well.
Especially to both Peter & Richard for your wise instruction and suggestions.
I will take onboard all the adivce you both have freely given.
So with the help of my physio and fellow brothers in arms for support, I see a long but productive road to recovery.
Thanks again........Bill

I'll second Richard's advice, Bill. Whatever you do, get your physio's go ahead before you try anything. My dad had a motorbike accident and he cant shoot bows because it hurts him a bit.
But everyone heals at their own rate. Usually if you do what the specialists say, you'll come out ok.

Good luck with your recovery Bill.
All the best,

Ben

Hi Bill, about 18 months ago I had surgery which resulted in about 12mm being cut of the end of my collar bone in my right shoulder - my drawing arm. Could not do any thing with it for about 2 weeks (no driving, lifting kids) but after about 4 weeks started driving but no lifting above my shoulder height. Started shooting a light poundage bow about 6 months later and now can shoot a bow 2-3 times a week but have had to drop down in weight from around 55lb to 45-48lb. Shoulder still hurts after a big day of shooting or surfing etc but has coming pretty good - much better than before which basically got to a point where I could not shoot, surf, pick up kids etc. Recovery time will depend exactly on what the nature and scope of your surgery is? If you have any other questions PM me. Regards,Phill
