#1 Post by special » Fri Aug 21, 2009 10:11 pm

Hi Guys..
Ive been making solid brass inserts and various adaptors to order..and will be doing so for a limmited time..
Generally they are to fit 0.246" inside diameter shafts like GT 75/95 etc..but they can be made inhouse to any specification supplied(pref in thou) with weight starting at 40gns thru to 150gns(or above if neccessary)They have a thick collar and a grooved glueing area..and are weight matched.
I can ussually have them in the mail within the week and im charging $24 Dozen delivered.

Hey Rod, some fellas in the US are making a drill guide to drill and load the front on Woodies, a good idea and maybe someone who is useful with a lathe could whip some up HINT HINT  . Steve

try using carbon express 'bulldog collars' as a guide, the std should fit 5/16" shafts and the CXL2 may fit the 11/32" shaft, they're alloy and too light but the specs may be useful.

I think I have a couple of adaptors that fit over wood shafts so screw in tips can be used....Let me know if you want one to see if you can make them out of brass and I will send one up to you...
Cheers...Sparra

Got some 150 grainers off Special today. Look great and will do a good job of weighting up the front of a carbon shaft.

Hi Rob, I am not interested in outserts for timbers, I dont know about others. There is a drilling guide that can be made so you can hollow out timbers and weight up the front internally, outserts can be easily made with alloy shafts and use your brass inserts.
If you could come up with a drill guide to fit snuggly over the outside of an 11/32 and or 5/16 shafts to take a drill that matches available brass rod I will take one or both :D. Thanks Steve

Hmmm...Ill have to see what I can come up with....Maybe an outsert fitted with a drill bit that can be wound in by hand??
Any links to something similar out there???

I just checked out a jig like you described..Its just a 50mm x 19mm dia (roughly) piece of SS bar..one end turned to fit a shaft snugly in about 25mm and the other to accept a small drill bit the other 25mm...slip it on the shaft and use a hand drill to drill out a core large enough for brass brazing rod or similar...Ill knock a couple up to trial

Sizes are 11/32 (5/16 shaft clearance fit)
23/64 for larger shaft
Drill bit size 9/64 to accept 1/8" rod

EASY!..ill have to wait for correct bits to arrive

Sounds good Rob, I will buy and test your prototype, I have no use for the larger diameter jig however. :D

heres Proto #1
SAE timber Arrow Drilling Jig..

This one is made from bright machine bar and has the incorrect drill hole diameters(waiting for bits to arrive)...I will prob use SS as it will wear better and not rust up...
Features Knurled outer surface to aid in fitting over shaft and holding..
Rounded edges and tapered openings to the holes for easy use..
Simply push shaft 25mm into one end and it will bottom against the natural drill tip taper..
Then using a variable speed drill and correct bit feed into the other end until the correct depth is achieved...
All holes are drilled in a lathe and are perfectly centred..

Remmember this is only a roughie
they sell for $25USD in the Stated plus postage(not knurled..not SS)..So your looking at around $60AUS..
I hope to do them delivered for under half that including the drill bit :D

Thanks Rob, you have my address when you are happy with it.
Are you supplying grain matched weight rod for punters who dont have a grain scale  and bulk rod for those who want to save and match thier own?
You are handy to have around. Steve :D

Ill investigate the rod..but yes Ill supply weight matched brass rods...Maybe tungsten TIG electrodes may fit..They will be very heavy for length, but maybe a tad pricey

I can certainly vouch for the quality of Rob's inserts. I have a dozen 125gr ones and they work a treat.

Got my 165 gns inserts today and they measured almost dead on on my powder grain scale. Excellent quality. Well done Rob. Cheers.
