Adam,

Townsville Indoor Archery Centre may be able to help - 07 4728 7222. They are the Three Rivers distributor for Australia. I think they have an email address as well.

I doubt that you will be able to get real barred turkey feathers or if you can I think the price will scare you. Most people opt for the imitation turkey barred feathers now days.

turkey feathers

#6 Post by archangel » Fri Apr 29, 2005 10:29 pm

G'day Adam,

We still haven't caught up in Perth, I am now in the country during the week at Cunderdin (2hours) and come home on Fridays. The ag. college where I teach has just placed an order for 40 young turkeys that will be raised by the students.

At 20 weeks they will be knocked off ... and guess who will be asking for all of the feathers???? If you want to stay in touch, I'll hold some for you. I will take a while but should be worth it.

PS. Looking forward to seeing The Bow - you must be stoked!!

Adam,

I've been buying POC from Archery Mart. They seem to have the best prices from what I can tell. They're still pretty expensive though.

I saw in an earlier post that Stickbow Hunter (Jeff) has a bloke up his way (Maryborough Qld) that sells shafts in Oz timbers for as little as $1 each. That would be hard to beat. Jeff uses them I think. I'll check them out for myself next time I want shafts.

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Would you need to be carful getting Shafts from another state???
As I have heard (may have been on this site) that the change in weather conditions from state to state can affect the wood and warp and make the shafts do funny things  due to the change in air moisture content.
Say like going from tropical humid northern Australia to say SA or Vic.

woods

#13 Post by archangel » Sat Apr 30, 2005 10:11 pm

Adam

I'm trying to get hold of some silver ash (Qld) or Vict ash, enough to cut dozens of shafts. I have also managed to locate some well-seasoned oregon just out of Perth - I will chase this up next week. It makes great shafts, espec. with hardwood footings. If any of the above turns up, I will advise WA locals and work something out.

Pretty keen to get my hands on some woods. Archangel do you do footed shafts if so do you think you could show me how one day :D. The more time I put into and arrow the better if feels when its racing offf the shelf at a critter. How much are you paying for poc Mick Smith.

Are index or speed nocks getting hard to find in a good color range.

Jeff are these shafts the ozwoods I was using in 98 99. Sounds pretty interesting.

Thanks Guys Adam

Stace,
I would use feathers from any wing as long as they are all from the same wing on an arrow. I would prefer though that they are from the same wing on the whole set of arrows, mostly for a uniform look in the quiver.

Adam,

Sorry for this late reply but I have been away since late last week. No, the shafts are not the old OZ-WOOD shafts. They were pine and these are Victorian Ash. They are about the same weight and are very strong and make excellent arras IMO. They are great value for money also.

Adam,

Have a look in the Links section in the Forum Index. Check out the one entitled "Materials". Jeff has a post there with contact details for the ash shafts you were discussing.

Adam,

Mick has probably got you on the right track regarding the arra shafts, thanks Mick.

Keith is a good bloke and will no doubt be only to glad to help you out with the shafts you want.

No, I wasn't hunting. :( I have planned to get away on a good hunt in July and I sure am looking forward to it as it has been awhile since I have been bush.
