which SLR???

#1 Post by otis.drum » Tue Jun 29, 2010 2:48 pm

yesterday i sold my canon 350D to my sister for $300 to save her going out and buying something she couldn't afford, use or need... which left me without my SLR :(

so i'm now in the hunt for a new SLR. i'd love the Canon 1D mark IV, but more realistically... i like and am leaning towards the Canon 550D over the nikon D5000, but thought i'd throw it up here for some advice and opinions. has anyone had any experience with either of these cameras.

i take all sorts of photos, but mainly outdoor landscape, nature etc. the HD video of the canon is also a winning factor for me.

any opinions welcome.

thanks

Whichever one you get the better price on... :)

I'm sort of partial to Nikon gear, Jeff on the other hand...

Yep Canon for me RC.

Seriously try and get to a shop and handle both and see which you prefer. Out of those two the Canon is a newer model so will have the latest technology. For landscape a full frame camera such as the Canon 5DII (don't know which Nikon is the equivelent) would be better but they are quite a bit more expensive. Remember good glass costs a lot also.

This is a link to a thread piggy started very recently on a very sinilar topic. http://www.ozbow.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9897

Anymore questions just ask.

The Nikon D3 is probably the closest to the Canon 5D (better take yours and your neighbours pop cans back for those cameras). Full format cameras are out of my range (at least until my kids start fending for themselves ;) )

Probably a closer comparison for the 550D would be the Nikon D90 or even the D300. I use a pre-video D300 but I also picked up a new D90 (with HD vid) about 4 months ago- it's what I shot by Bowron photos with. It's a nice rig except that it doesn't have a live histogram display (which I didn't think would annoy me but it does a bit :) ) It displays it after you take the shot so at least you can adjust after the fact and try again if you don't like the results from the first go 'round.

But like Jeff said, it's the amount of cash you hang off the front of the camera that will really make the difference. :)

Morning All.

I have made the commitment to Canon and so far do not regret that decision.

A lot of this courses-for-horses stuff which is why I purchased my Casio - simply a specialist camera. If you want to do landscapes (god knows why) the a specialist landscape camera is the deal. If you want really high resolution camera then a Hassleblad with -The 39-megapixel back, with a sensor twice the size of premier DSLRs, features two capture modes and a new digital lens correction technology for Carl Zeiss lenses, - may be an answer. :D

For me a Canon 550D or 50D will do all I want.

i will give the hassleblad a miss, but thank you anyway grahame :) i have seen them before, and thought they did a 49meg/pix camera. maybe i'm wrong.

the 50D does not have HD video which i want. i am now in the process of attempting to negotiate a budget increase grant from the other half. it will hopefully fund a nice little 7D and a couple of lenses 8) 8) wish me luck

That just may end up costing you a lot more when the other half tells you what new toy she would also like.

Rumours are a new 60D is about to be released.

Most likely I would say. Remember roumors are just that until Canon actually release their info. :D

The 7D would be a very nice bit of kit though mate.

The last time I checked you could get up to 64MPix backs. The nice thing about that back is it will shoot in two different ratios. :D

Could luck with the Budget increase or just put in a couple of overtime shifts.
