Thanks Guys, The mines were pretty amazing and one hopes they found some gold with the effort they went to.
Otis, there was a bat living in one of the shafts but no other beasties. The prawn's were nice, perfect for entree :) That bowl was from about an hour with the trap in and besides Dad is allergic to crustacean's so it was just for me :) Steve

Great photos Steve, they told the story very well indeed. :D It looked like a great place to spend a few days.

Those old mines are amazing. I have to say you wouldn't get me going in that far.  Has the shaft been lined with cement or similar as the top and walls look very smooth in places?

yep that's one nice place there. it bet it is on the bridal trail between bathurst and hill end. i've been in that tunnel too. one hell of a road. not one to be driving on while under the influence!

otis- yes there is gold in those hills. the biggest nugget ever found in australia (the world??) was found near hill end.

goats and fallow deer in them hills and cod and yellowbelly in the river!

Yes Clinton, its one hell of a road :) but a great place, feels like wild country and is great for clearing the head.
Jeff, dad and I went out after the expo for 3 days. He was passing through on the way to Victoria on the bike so I offered to take him for a fish.
Jindy, yes a good place to unwind, the shrimp were having a munch on our legs when we went for a swim so it is only fair that we have a go too :) .

Hey Steve I remember snorkelling in that river when we were kids and catching those shrimp by hand. There was heaps of them.I often wondered if they'd still be in there.
It was great fun until a few red bellies were sighted, one in the water near the kids that were swimming.
That sort of put an end to it.
Looks like you had a good time,i'd like to check out that cave some time.

I would happily take you along it Otis, it is single lane along that section with small bays every so often incase another vehicle comes along.
The way out the passenger is hanging over the edge and visa versa for the return trip. Approximately 30klm's in length.
Jeff, we saw no snakes :) , the shrimp seem to be territorial and we took out a small population on 2 meters of river bank. When you get in another spot they are nibbling your legs so there are heaps. They tasted as good as salt water prawns. Steve

otis-your probably right, i'm no gold boffin but i'm sure some mega nugget was dug up around hill end.

thanks for the pics steve, it has brought back great memories of my wife and i's trip around the country. i recognised the place straight away and when i scrolled down and saw the tunnel i knew i was right. i'm hopeless with names but i've got a great memory for the places i've been.

sounds good steve. is it close to home for you? shrimp are tasty too. wait til you try cherabin. tastes the same only 8-10 times the size. get a bit more of a meal out of them.

clinton, i took a school camp to soveriegn hill (a sort of theme park of the gold rush days) a couple of years ago. thats the only reason i knew. it's an amazing place. you get to dress up in period theme, pan for gold, all buildings are period. it's quite good.

Most of my mum's rellies came from Hill End and Sofala.
One of them was a mounted state trooper who was killed in action guarding a Cobb & Co coach gold shipment. He was posthumously awarded a gong last year.

With the price of gold a lot of those difficult to mine leases are going back into action.
You could pay for your metal detector with only a smal hit nowadays. Up around $1100 mark an ounze and they reckon it'll go to $2000.....rock does not look so hard at that price.

hey Steve
I delivered a couple of water tanks to Hill end last week.
I would love to spend some time drawing some of the old houses and mining stuff in the area.
I didn't know you could catch shrimp in the river up there.

First of all Mark, Missing your emails and when are you going to visit?
There are a lot of subjects to paint out there.
How is business going? Are you living at Bathurst now?
Take a cathedral trap or similar next time you go out and place it right near the bank on a steep section, or just get in until you feel somthing eating you then you know where to place the trap :D .
Make sure you get in touch. Steve
