Tocumwal & surrounds (Pic heavy!!!)
Jude and I had a month away recently with the caravan in tow. We ended up going further south than we originally planned so we could catch up for a few days with a our good mate Dennis La Varenne. It was great to catch up with Dennis and we really loved the little town of Tocumwal where he lives. It was a shame that the Murray River was in flood due to water being released from the Hume dam. I would love to go back when the water is at a more normal level. Anyway these are a selection of photos we took in and around Toc.
Jeff
These photos are of the old railway bridge. I had never seen a bridge where a whole span could be lifted straight up in the horizontal position before. The train only runs once a day I believe so there is plenty of time for taking photos.
The next few photos were taken at what seems like just a bit of a rise in the surrounding countryside. It is granite and it was quarried from this area. The second photo is of a depression in the granite where there in a sink hole. This hole is said to be 15 - 30 metres deep and the water level rises and falls depending on how dry the seasons are. It is fed by the underground water table. Very interesting to see. Cont……..

A real feature for me was the beautiful old River Red Gums that line the Murray River.
Jeff
On leaving Toc we were finally able to pull off to the side of the road to get a photo of a water wheel on one of the irrigation channels.
I will start another thread with photos of other areas where we stayed during our trip.Jeff

Hi Jeff
I know that area well as I lived near there from the early seventies and remember seeing water in the river right up to the bottom of the bridge and the bridge shaking with force of the water and going to the silo's to deliver soya beans that we grew on our farm twenty miles north west of Finley. It looks a bit damp around there at the moment, Town beach would be under water. I would finish work on the farm in summer afternoons and jump on my Kawasaki Z9 and get to Town beach for swim with friends and ogle the local talent most of whom I had gone to school with, the life memories come flooding back

It is a great spot alright Bill.
Glad you liked seeing the photos Bob.
Matt, the town beach was under water and in fact you couldn't even get to the campground because of the water. Dennis's brother in-law and I walked down the road that goes to the town beach as far as we could though.

Very nice pics thanks for sharing.....I have a memory of staying at the Terminus many many years ago.( Showing the age here) I recall in the upstairs rooms the saddles left outside the room doors in the corridor. And a great public bar

Thanks Jim. Yes it was great to get away for the month. The other recent threads of mine below cover some of the other places we visited on the trip. We hope to be able to sneak in a trip like that once or twice a year if we can. Free camping certainly helps the dollars go further makes such trips possible.
