The mother of all Huntsmans

#1 Post by Jeffro » Sat Oct 22, 2011 3:01 pm

Last weekend at the trad shoot my son told me he just saw a huge spider on a log in the fire.
I didn't think much of it but then walking past the fire i had a look and he was right.
Without a doubt the biggest one ive ever seen.
Is it a huntsman or some other type?
I rescued it from being burnt and let it go next to a tree.

I have no idea if it is a huntsman but it gives me the creeps anyway. I just hate spiders!!! :surprised:

there are about 95 named species of Huntsman spiders in Oz. Looks like a reasonably large mature female Sydney Huntsman to me. If not possibly a Grey Huntsman.

Nature pest controllers. You find large numbers under the bark of trees as well as in roof void eaved sections. gotta love them.

interesting spider for sure , looks like a huntsman in the body , but has the markings like a golden orb weaver , but they way the body is id put my money on a huntsman.

Great photo's it looks like a Huntsman, it's just a baby compared to the QLD ones.

Similar camo to a little orb weaver a had in the house a while back , interesting how 2 different spiders can have a similar paint job.

Big difference in eye patterns, behaviour and length of legs. Huntsmen are open range Aranomorphs or modern spiders whereas the orb weavers whilst being modern spiders are master weavers or wheel web weavers. With orb weaver females the abdomen is sort of pointed at the end. Huntsmen have two rows of 4 eyes whereas orb weavers have a row of 6 near the chelicerae [fang housing] with a smaller ror of two eyes further back.

patterns of bands are a very common thing with arthropods. Remember there are over 3 million species of insects, spiders and allied life forms.
