We love Australia!!! (Pic heavy)

#1 Post by Stickbow Hunter » Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:25 pm

You might wonder about the title of this thread but there is a story behind it. As most will know Jude and I spent six weeks traveling on our bike in the latter part of February to early April this year. We got to see some stunning places that we will always remember.

Anyway, we were a few days from home up on top of the mountains somewhere between Goulburn and Bathurst; it was a beautiful morning and we were just soaking up the views when we rounded a corner and saw the road blocked by a Cocky moving a mob of sheep along the road towards us. I brought the bike to a stop on the edge of the road and waited for them to pass by. The Cocky was following the mob in his Landcruiser ute and sent a couple of Kelpies out to move the mob around us. I took the opportunity to get the camera out of the tank bag and take a few shots.

We were soon on our way again and Jude (blue tooth intercom helmet sets are wonderful things) commented on what a beautiful country we lived in and I certainly agreed. Of course there are beautiful places in many parts of the world no doubt, but we have so much beauty right here in our own back yard. Australia is home and we love it and hope to get the opportunity to see a lot more of it in the coming years.

We feel really blessed to have been able to do our recent trip; the longest one in our whole lives. I really can't express how great it was. We basically rode from here via mountain roads to Wollongong where we stayed a few days with Jude's brother and his family. He showed us around the area while we were there. We then rode down the coast a ways and then back up into the mountains and down into Melbourne - what a nightmare that place was for us country folk. Then it was off to spend eighteen days in Tassie. Once back on the mainland we rode the Great Ocean Road and then meandered our way home via the mountains and back roads. We traveled just shy of 10,000 kms in total for the trip.

We took over two thousand photos and could have taken many more but the lack of time and the fact that it isn't easy taking photos when you are riding a bike and wearing a full face helmet limited us quite a bit.

Anyway through these photos I wanted to share a little of what we got to see on our trip. The small photos simply can't do many of the places justice but hopefully they give you a bit of an idea. No doubt some of the places you have been to yourself or may even live near them. Also because we like traveling on our bike quite a number of the photos will feature it, or at least bits of it, in them.

I will probably break the photos up into a number of posts or even threads as there are a lot and it will help with downloading them. I still have a lot to resize for the web as well so it might take awhile to get the whole trip done.

We went from Beaudesert in Qld to Kyogal in NSW via the Lions Road. We have been that way once before but we enjoyed it just as much this time.

We planned on riding up to Dorrigo via Coramba as our map showed it was sealed road all the way. After seventeen kms we struck dirt which deteriorated into logging roads. It was wet and rough and extremely slippery and I am very grateful I didn't drop the bike. Anyway we made it to Dorrigo safely after our little adventure and stayed the night in the Heritage Hotel Motel; highly recommended.

The next morning when we left it was raining and the road down the range (The Waterfall Way) was quite slippery but we still managed a few photos; would love to get that road dry.

Real nice, Jeff!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

The next day saw us riding to Woolongong via Dungog, Gresford onto Singleton and then down the Putty Road. Jude tried to take a few photos on the Putty Road but reckons she felt sick; I wonder why!

I have to agree Jeff...after my little trip around central/western ld...this certainly is a magnificent and beautiful country!

I don't want to hijack your thread - so will post some photos in my original thread when time permits.

Those scenes are certainly breathtaking!

The next couple of days were spent sightseeing around Woolongong, Stanwell Park, Kiama, Berry, Kangaroo Valley and up to Robertson etc. Absolutely beautiful country.

On the move again. We headed down the Princes Highway and struck the wet weather again. We were going to get our flask out and make a coffee at Ulladulla but the rain stopped that but I grabbed a nice shot of the harbour which is right beside the road. We saw a seal in the harbour too which was a first for us.

We continued onto Pambula and then headed up the mountains to Bombala via Wyndam and Cathcart. We rode up through a thick cloud (fog) and then broke out into sunshine again.

When we got to Bombala there was no accommodation so we rode onto Delegate and stayed the night in the Pub there. That was quite an experience, just ask Jude about it. The next morning it was drizzling rain again and cold as we headed down the Bonang Highway into Victoria to Orbost. This road would have to be one of the windiest bits of road around; the 105kms took us two and a half hours. There are two sections of dirt (15kms total) along this highway. I must say we rode through some beautiful country and it is part of the Snowy River Trail.

We discovered later in the day that we had a slow leak in the rear tyre so we rode all the way to Melbourne and what a nightmare that was. We hit peak hour and the Sat Nav took us through the city. I know why we love living in the country.

Ok Tassie is next so I will start a part two sometime.

What's the story with those locks? Are they holding the bridge together?

You went through Wyndham! That was quite a detour! You should've dropped-in!

Hi Jeff.

Hmm... I am inspired to go for a drive.

Melbourne has a couple of things I like - the Trams are great and in some ways a good enough reason to visit the place and then there is "Puffing Billy". However, you are not alone in considering it a nightmare.

There is some great Railway History in Dorrigo.

Earlier this year 8 week trip thru NSW & Qld. As you say Jeff Love Australia. If I only new how to post picture to the site. Cheers Roadie.

Jeff, fantastic pictures.

I love the 'donations for the road' sign next to the 2 speed cameras.
Someone should erect a sign next to them reading: 'donations to the pollies'.

Looking forward to your photos blu-dog.

I don't think so Ben. From what we could find out (have know idea how it got started) the locks all have engraving on them and celebrate marriages, anniversaries etc. The people who own the locks come and lock them to the bridge and throw the key into the ocean as a declaration of their love for each other. All I could see was some very expensive locks going to waste.

It most certainly is mate. This was our second ride along it and it is just goes through such beautiful country. We were actually going the Mt Lindsey Highway but it was still blocked from damage caused by the floods.

Not a good enough reason for us to want to go back Grahame. I can still see the first tram we saw coming right at us as we turned into a street; I think Jude was just about to jump off. I honestly wasn't sure where I should ride.

Roadie, your photos are excellent and you will have to learn how to upload them.

The road was actually built by the Lions club many years ago and the donations are to help with the upkeep. Those cameras are on the Qld - NSW border so I guess they are just keeping an eye on who comes and goes. :D

I hope I didn't miss answering any questions from anyone but if I did just remind me. Thanks once again for your comments. I might go and start part two.
