California Bighorn Sheep

#1 Post by Tuffcity » Tue Mar 22, 2011 11:52 am

But not in California :) I attended a convention put on by the Wild Sheep Society of BC this past weekend and so I had to go look for sheep (wild ones, no Wellies involved :) ) Here's a couple of photos of one of 4 types of wild sheep we have in BC.

T.C. Are those called "Mouflon Sheep" or something like that? I think I've read about them somewhere. Great pics, thanks a lot, mate. Just don't let any Kiwis loose near 'em, the challenge would be too much for 'em to resist! :D

Thanks Tuffcity, I notice the horns have been trimmed, is that to prevent them from being shot due to laws regarding horn length? Steve

Moreton; Not mouflon- those are a European Sheep I believe. These are called California Bighorns (or Cali's), BC also has Rocky Mountain Bighorns, Dall, and Stone Sheep. The last two are known as thin horn sheep.

longbow Steve: You wouldn't get close enough to these guys to trim anything! It's called "brooming" when the horns are broken off like that. It occurs when they fight during the rut and sometimes the horns get smash up a bit on rocks, etc.

big bob: I used a Nikon 200-400 lens (the bold was for Jeff :) ). Should have used a smaller aperature though. :)

There was an excellent Exhibition of Wildlife Photography at the Brisbane Museum the other year. What did surprise me was the number of photos taken with hybrid setups. Typically a Nikon body fitted a with a Canon Lens.

Sometimes a body has to dress down to fit in with the common element. :)

Australia is a country that it is said that grew off the sheep's back but then they wanted to change this and make us the clever country instead....

I think they were missing the obvious alternative and snapped this photo in one of the more pedogogical areas of Australia. They are not difficult to get near AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A CAMERA.

BTW I did enjoy your nature snaps.

Cheers
