Yowie suit

#1 Post by TEX » Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:36 pm

I made a yowie suit this weekend.
I left it mainly light beige and added some green in places to suit the cured grass out west.
Hopefully I will be able to give it a whirl in the comming months.
The hessian was from a potatoe sack. I cut it into strips and glued it to an old camo shirt.
The hat is also a camo cap covered the same way.
My bush in the back yarg is a little to green for this colour scheme but you can get the idea of the suit.

If the suit works I will be making another one which I will post it's construction as I go

LB.. as long as that's all the animals want to do that's fine.

Blinky.. Thanks mate.

Jeff.. My face is covered with a net which is mainly kept free from the hessian on the right side so I can still find my anchor.
The hat is also open on the right side to allow for aiming and free string movement.

Ok, but what about your bow arm, it won't be easy but I will wait and get your report after shooting your bow with it on. :D

Should be OK

Ok Jeff
I had a few shots and found that the string was hitting the hessian.
After a bit of a trim I had another shot. 20 meters and hit the little hiphog in the vitals so I left it at that.
I might give the hat a little trim as well.
Apart from that I will have to se how it goes in the field.

I snag enough on stuff without being covered with hangy bits, but if you can manage not to snag its awesome camo.

Yes you have to be careful when walking through thick bush. But the area I will be using the suit is fairly open that,s why I made it.
I think the biggest problem with the suit so far is the itching. The small hair fibers get in all sorts of unwanted areas and make you itchy.
If I can put up with that I should be alright. I was thinking of keeping the suit in my day pack until I come across some game then put it on for the stalk in. If the situation allows it that is.

Well mate that suit makes you look almost human compared to wandering round the paddock in a dress. A good bit of work! Could you not try 50% shade-cloth or some other less itchy mesh under the camo strips?

Jape
I will try to make a non itchy version. I will look into a light weight mess for a base to work from.
I thought that if I used the old camo shirt as a base it would keep the hessian off my skin. Well it does it's just the little fibers that come off which find there way inside the suit.
As for a dress well a yowie dress could work. Just slide it over my head.

How does it go in grass seed and burr country, and I reckon getting through a blackberry thicket in it would be interesting....

Well Woody

I have only walked in the bush behind my house so far and it catches on some branches.
It's only the top half so grass should be no problems.
The suit is designed to hunt in open country with little cover. More of a sit in ambush type of scenario. I made it to try and outsmart a cunning fox that I have been after.

The cunning fox takes on the cunning fox, hope it doesn't decide you are a territory marking clump ...

Jape you could imagine the reaction you would get if a fox did wonder up and try and share his scent while you where wearing a yowie suit. Give him a quick jab in the side with a razor sharp broad head. I think he would leave you with more than his scent.

I had a wallaby run into me once. I had myself sitting next to a small sapling waiting for this old blueish grey haired billy to come along the track in front of me when I heard something to my left. As I slowly turned to see what it was this wallaby suddenly realized that this bush had eyes and he tried to stop so suddenly that he slid along he ground with his legs going in all directions and then rolled and hit me in the side. Funny stuff.

As for the old blueish grey billy well lets just say a few minutes later he came into view. He was sporting the biggest set of horns I had seen in the wild. You could imagine the sight his long beard and horns swaying back an forth as he walked along unaware of me in my suit sitting in ambush. Any way I was just about to pull back for the shot when I thought I should see where the guy I was hunting with was. I whispered into the headset I was wearing and the silly bugger had moved around to the opposite side of the billy from me. He had no idea that the billy was there and he scared the billy off as he came into view to show me where he was.
That was the first and last time I ever went hunting with him. He kept taking off on his own and always ended up crossing my path.
I will never forget that billy.

You cant put a price on experiences like that though, its even above taking an animal imo.
