I realise this is an older post, but the link http://www.ozbow.net/woodarrows_1_001.htm doesn't seem to be working. Is there somewhere else we maybe able to get some info on making wooden arrows? Any advice would be great...cheers

Sorry but that link has not worked for quite some time and in fact the article is not even on the site anymore. It is one of the many fixes needed on the site. However I just went through some old files of the site and found the various pages and I quickly did up a PDF and attached it in my original post. I would like to do some finishing touches to it but I think the whole of the old article is there (let me know if any info is missing). I hope it helps.

Yeah Troy the article is one I wrote for the Australian Bowhunter mag back in the late 1990's so I wasn't as grey and had more hair back then.

Hi Jeff,

I am thinking of getting gradually getting my tools together to make some woodies. I was considering buying the bitzenberger jig. Dunno what to get for a right handed person - straight or helical left or right. I want to make arras for the Whip but also to make some for the Crimean Tatar horn bow (10 months away though) which has no shelf.

What do you think?

Jase, You won't go wrong with the Bitzenberger jig as it will last you a life time. They say technically a right handed archer should use left wing feathers but it really doesn't matter one bit IMO. I would get the right wing helical jig if I was you. In Australia 99% of the feathers available a right wing anyway.

As far as glues for feathers go I use Loctite super glue. You can get it at Bunnings.

That's a great article. For those who struggle to find a decent set of shafts to start with, there is another way. The best set of woodies I've ever seen were made by a kid at our club. I think he was about 13 or 14 at the time (it was definitely before he discovered girls). He got a blank of perfect straight-grained Douglas Fir, and then ripped it down to 9mm billets. Then he took off the corners with a hand plane, and then finished up the round with a sander. He checked the diameters by using a simple round hole gauge. The thing that got me about this set was that because they were all ripped from the same baulk, they were perfectly matched in spine. And yes the kid made his own spine tester and weighed them as well. This kid also made his own bows. He did have one huge advantage over the rest of us, his father was a violin maker with an international reputation. So the workshop he had access to was pretty good. Unfortunately though he discovered girls, and we don't see him any more. Last I heard he was training to be a lawyer. What a tragic waste.
