To be honest , that is a really bad way to show how a Flemish Splice Bowstring is made IMO . If I had to learn off that ,, I wouldnt be doing it now . Its confusing to say the least . I looked at that when I first started .

I learned from Dennis' article and the geocities site.

Incidentally this Easter is the National Folk Festival - www.folkfestival.asn.au - there are always interesting themes at this event, and one is Natural Fibres.

Anyhow I am a volunteer at the event and took in some of my strings made up from linen. Well next thing I've been asked to be part of the Tradition Bearer's (trad arts/crafts) display and I'll be running a couple of workshops making up some strings.....kiddies of all ages.

And next year I hope to get a budget and see if some of you bowyers out there would be able to come to Canberra and demonstrate bowyery. There is already in-principle agreement from the management for this. So stay tuned.

I think that is a very hard tutorial from Jim Fetrow to understand as well, I doubt if I had never made one I would find it hard to get started using that as a giude. Anybody making a flemish string from modern non-stretch materials would be well advised to make a 2 lay string instead of the 3 lay string as shown for dacron as the 3 lay strings are too small and pack down harder than a 2 lay string made out of fastflight or similar material...Glenn...

This is the one I used and was really easy to follow for a beginner like myself http://poorfolkbows.com/flemish1.htm. But I found the serving instruction at the end of the build along a bit confusing so had a look at several youtube vids to get a better idea.

Does anyone have the link to this article? The link is broken. I'm trying to make a bowstring for my compound bow and traditional bow but I'm seriously confused. I was searching all over the internet but I can't find any really goo resources.

the link in the second post of this thread (by GrahameA) is the one that works currently, for the Flemish string for you Trad bow, which is completed different from an endless string, which is used for a compound bow, and some people do them for Trad bow too, however it is not recommended.

Why? Endless is all I've ever made and used. Plenty of people use them for trad bows.

Morning.

It is good to know how to make them as they can be made 'in the field' without the need for a jig.

well if you're happy with that - fine.
A Flemish string has all strands going up and around the bow tips.

True, but that doesn't mean an endless is any weaker.

Morning All.

Flemish Strings compared to Endless Strings compared to Strings with Spliced Endss compared to ...

Without some hard testing and numbers the comparison of one string type to another is mainly one of opinion. It is worthwhile noting that most Target Archers use endless strings. Many 'Traditional Archers' use a Flemish String.

Ah ha, I knew it. They're not recommended because they're not traditional enough. Here I was thinking there might be a valid reason why they're not recommended.

Really really!

It has nothing to do with being traditional enough. As to not being recommended, that is just a personal thing. A flemish loop is just a beautiful way to produce a bowstring for trad bows, that doesn't require additional serving for the loops, or a specialised jig.

Endless or flemish, in reality are both perfectly fine for use.
