Ozbow

Hi all,

I’ve made a few bows before, but I have been working on a new design and I wanted to incorporate a much heavier handle material and a different bow form.

After a few false starts, and a lot of waiting for epoxy to cure, I’ve finally got something to show for my efforts

This also includes a 3 bundle Flemish Twist.

Note: it is a little brighter in person.

A couple of observations, those limbs look uneven in the amount of reflex in each. Have you got a photo of the the bow at full draw?

Another suggestion is to not have a square cut shelf like you have as when the riser (handle) flexes, and it will, it can cause it to crack lengthwise on the back right in the square cut corner. Rounding the shelf there helps eliminate that.

I tillered it on the wall and at the time it was pretty even (I’m a bit of a stickler). However, I did do a little finishing work since then which shouldn’t have changed the tiller, but I’ll check again. I *think* that it looks pretty even when strung. I’ll need to get someone to take a pic at full draw.

The sight window is the first time I’ve made one this big. The others have been much smaller - but I can assure you that there are no stress risers. I suspect that the riser should be plenty strong enough. My concern is more about belly failure.

My comment regarding the reflex being different in the limbs was because in the photo of the strung bow it looked like the reflex point was sharper on the top limb compared with the bottom. It may just be the angle of the photo. I would like to see a photo of it at full draw just to see the bend in the limbs.

In my experience nearly all risers have a minute amount of flex in them. I have seen many bows with a stress crack in the back glass in the corner of the shelf. They don't seem to fail but just show a small crack.

Anyway once again enjoy shooting it.

Thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for that. As I said, this is definitely the largest sight window for me.

I’ll get my wife to take a pixie at full draw over the weekend.
