Does anyone here make sinew-backed bows? If so, where do you source the sinew?

Nicholas:

I see you've landed back home safely, a loss for your Berkeley, California bow kin.

If you can't find local sinew I can send you enough for a bow. Keep me posted.

Hi Tim,

I was not expecting that you'd be the one to reply to me! Yes, all settled back in Australia now! Haven't done any bow-making yet, and haven't found in bowyers in my area either (Perth), but trying to get things going.

I appreciate the offer of sinew from the US, unfortunately I don't think the Australian quarantine people will let that happen.

Cheers

Nic

Hi Woodie,

I've seen kangaroo sinew for sale online and was thinking it might be an option, wasn't sure about the quality, though. Did you try backing a bow with it?

Cheers

Nic

Hi Nicholas. Asian butcher shops readily sell Ox tendons. They range in length anywhere from 6-10inches, this is where I source my sinew from ;)

I have not done a full size bow but I have to a small one to test my knowledge, which did work.

Looks like I need to hit-up my local pet stores and butchers! Thanks all. I enjoy a challenge, but I miss the days in the US when I could order elk sinews online!

Hi Nicholas,

I was going through some old files and found this reply to an enquiry regarding the importation of processed sinew.

Daryl.

"I have recently been in touch with the Biological Imports Program | Animal Division, Department of Agriculture regarding the importation of processed sinew [from 3 Rivers Archery] into Australia.

Their fees are rather high if bringing in a small quantity, but if one was to import fifty or so bundles over the two year period the fees are modest.

I give top marks to the departments that I contacted by email as replies were forth coming within twenty four hours.

Below is their reply.

Daryl.

“Dear Daryl,

Thank you for your email regarding the importation of sinew.

An import permit will be required for processed sinew for use as sporting equipment.

The application forms, fees and contact details can be obtained from the links below. Permits are generally valid for 2 years and can be used any number of times during this period. The permit will dictate conditions under which products may enter Australia. It is important that the importer reads and understands these conditions before importing.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN IMPORT PERMIT:

Department of Agriculture Home - Biosecurity Australia

Go to the QUICK LINKS (second box) on the right and click on eLodgement to begin the application process. (eLodgement is the most cost effective method) This will bring you to “Hints for completing eLodgement”. Then click on eLodgement on the left hand side (blue box) then click on Biological Materials. Then click on Application to Import Biological Material.

Alternatively forms may be downloaded for posting or faxing – on the left hand side of the page go to Department of Agriculture forms; to Biological Import Forms; to Application to Import Biological Materials.

Follow the form and fill out all required fields. It may be useful to refer to previous permits to assist you in this. If you have a previous permit for an identical product please quote this on the new application – this may save us having to contact you for information that has been previously supplied.
Charging schedule

eLodgement $85-00 (manual lodgement $150-00) plus assessment fee of approximately $80-00 per product

If you require any advice when making an application please phone the help line on 02 6272 8503 between 9 – 11am and 2 – 4pm Monday to Friday.
You may also email
biologicals@daff.gov.au for biological product advice
or

I hope this information is of assistance.

Kind regards,
Stuart Hogan
