Another Knife born

I was very lucky today I was in the right place at the right time, I got a 100 odd kg anvil for $100 so I had to have a play.
I finished off my forge last weekend, I was using heble blocks before while I was getting all the gear for a gas bottle forge.

A normal mans shed, please don't look at it.
So with a little bit of time I made a little neck knife.

I seem to have a thing for small knives.

Start building that arm up on the anvil mate, plenty time to hammer away on some great forged steel.

Cheers Wayno

Lucky Bugger, I'd love a Forge but I live in a Unit Complex. Look forward to seeing this little Knife finished. It must be a steep learning curve.

No not that steep as a fitter & turner I did my time in a few old shops, I served my time with Hunter Valley Training Co they sent apprentice where the work was, and I lived in the bush around farrier/blacksmiths so I know a bit. I just have the finer points to learn in knife making.
The little knife is already hardened and tempered ready to glue some G10 scales. Maybe tomorrow.

Nice pick up on the Anvil woodie. The first knife is looking good.

A word of caution for using your gas forge. I don't know if this is a issue for your forge but it was for mine and it won't take long to check. I see your jet arrangement is different to mine and may prevent the heat flowing backwards. After I turned it off, the residual heat flowed back up the inlet tube and made the gas hose very hot. I put a quick disconnect on the end of the hose so I can quickly remove the hose altogether. I later found out that most people just add an extension pipe onto the downward leg to make the path longer and provide a "heat trap". I did this also to be on the safe side (photo from before adding the pipe).

Rodlong I have not noticed that the hose gets hot but I will change it.
I finished the knife today, I am not polishing the blade as I am thinking of doing some domos/have a go at's the archery club and this took a total of 1hr to make with hand tools.
It is nice and hard where a file only just scratches it.
Handle is G10 and 316 TIG filler rode.

I just have to hone it up.

Great find Woodie, I'd love a proper anvil. At the moment my anvil is three sections of 75 mm square bar welded together. Very heavy, but it has no horn, nor hardie or pritchel holes. We all have to start somewhere though, right?

On my forge, the torch sits in a little sleeve that's welded to the side of the forge body. When I turn the gas off, I take the torch out so the heat doesn't race ip the torch and damage the hose/fittings.

I can take a picture if that doesn't make sense.

yes yeoman we have to start somewhere. Before I got this anvil I was using a chunk of steel that was scrap from work.
In the lines of heat traveling to the hose, I had a bash this afternoon and the heat did not travel to the hose, but I will be watching it.
