Ozbow

A mate of mine from my archery club asked me to make him a short recurve bow.
He would like a short bow because he is in a wheelchair. Anyone that has been to HVTA would of seen him Duncan, he is a great inspiration to those that have a handicap as he will have a go at anything.
After a lot of searching here as well as tradgang I was given a set of PDF form planes of a 46" bow.
It is 40 1/2" across nock to nock, 46" when strung by the person who gave it to me, has a 12" riser and a total core thickness of 180thou but I was going to make it around the 170thou because I am going to use 1.75" wide by 40thou thick glass. The core is vertical bamboo. Now for some lams and a riser.

Wow Woodie, Ya gona have some fun laying that one up. But I'm sure you're up to the task.

Might pay to add another couple of clamps/braces on the ends of your form, with curves like that there'll be some serious pressure to straighten that hose and bend/break your form.

Impressive curves! What tapers are you using on your lam stack?

The info that the block from the US gave me said 2 x 0.001/1" tapers as well as well as a power lam. That is a short lam that is just a 1" or 2 longer than the length of the riser, is that right?

Woodie, the recurve is certainly a compact design.

Will the string nocks be forward of the handle on the unbraced bow?

Daryl where the tape is sitting is about where the string grooves will be by the form pic that it is laid by, so I don't think they will be.

In the '30s (might have been the '40s) Dr. Hickman, of Archery: The Technical Side proposed a theoretical bow in which the limbs were so heavily reflexed that at full draw they were unwound to a straight alignment.

This looks much like the hypothesis proposed by Hickman. Great stuff! I'm very keen to see the end result. I intend on doing something similar in wood (though not so short) sometime.

I did some work towards making the bow/s today.
Cut out a riser for my recurve As well as getting the lams for both bows, one for me and one for Duncan, started. Still has to be tapered.

Getting' fancy there Woodie, should look great when it is all done.

Glued up one of the recurves yesterday but had a bit of trouble with the form not clamping the lams and glass to the riser. I think I cut out to much so it might be a new form coming.
So mid glue up I changed how I was gluing, I took out the riser and will add it to the belly.
Not sure what the poundage will be as I got 50 thou glass instead of 40 thou, no problems though.
The recipe is 2 50 thou glass 2 50 thou by 1 thou tappers.

I like the work you have been doing on the riser block Woodie. Hope the riser conforms to your limbs satisfactorily.They do work as I've seen other examples you know where.

I think I will be using a different riser block with this, I have some 50mm by 100mm Tassy oak that I will use.
