found a mollegabet !

#1 Post by bigbob » Wed Oct 01, 2014 3:11 pm

I was rooting around in my wood pile looking for something else entirely when i found a length of Masseranduba i forgot I had so decided to have ago at a bow that I've long admired especially as it appears to hark back to archery's prehistoric origins.I haven't finished the tiller as I gave away my tillering post to a newbie keen to have ago and haven't replaced it yet. Brace height is way too high when I took these shots at around 7 1/4''

While laboring away a small splinter lifted on one edge where there was a little grain run out so I backed it with burlap. Built the handle section up a little with layers of leather and then did a leather wrap, strictly utilitarian in function. At this point it is about 43# at 28'' and absolutely whisper quiet.

Interesting Bob, I am in the process of finishing a Danish bow at the moment.

Yeah Daryl I've got my spies monitoring you all the time!     Only thing about the Masseranduba I used in this one is although it often has superb straight grain, it is a lttle 'doughy' and takes a fair amount of string follow.

Nice little bow there Bob!

Just wondering where you picked up the masseranduba?

I would like to obtain some as I've recently discovered it is used in high end trilam ELB's made by heritage bows as a belly timber!!

I want to have a shot at a trilam in the near future and thought i could use it.

Cheers

Colin

howdy Colin, Bunnings had it in stock couple years ago which is when i picked up a couple of lengths. Made a little flat bow and now this one. Interesting you mention it being used in high end bows as my 'gut feeling' about it is that it is very flexible, but inclined towards taking a lot of string follow. However used as a belly lam with core and belly of less pliable material might turn this into an advantage.given its obviously great in compression.

Hi Bob,

Have a look at Heritage Longbows in the "Warbows" section, you'll find its listed as a belly timber in all their bows up to 140lbs...

I was a little sceptical at first too as I have heard some not great things about it but its listed so must be used and might be worth a crack.
