glue question

#1 Post by woodie » Sun Jun 23, 2013 5:34 pm

Hi all I have a question, I am going to use techniglue CA to make my longbow but what is the west system 205 epoxy like?

Hi Woodie, from memory it has features that are not ideal for bow making. From memory its temperature related. There are a few reported failures with West Systems so it would be wise not to use it IMO. Steve

ok thanks Steve. A woodworking mate of mine said he thought it would be work, I have not heard of it being used that why I thought I would ask the question. I think I will be sticking with Techniglue or Smoothon.

I'm with Steve - West System - I tried it. Don't. It is a delamination waiting to happen. I swapped to CA techniglue and have never had a problem.

Ditto.
West Systems is also corrosive, and will leak out of the container if you don't use it all up, and leave it in storage. Good glue for many other applications, but not bow laminations.
Techniglue awesome: Long shelf life; Its one of the few epoxies that handles glued on risers for self bows.

Only ever used smooth on and can't fault it, especially the longer pot life which means no haste in laying up a bow and maybe cutting corners if the epoxy starts curing prematurely. Excellent stuff!!!

I know it doesn't answer your question Woodie but I will only use Smooth-On. It has more than proven itself to be an excellent bow glue over the 20 plus years that I have been using it.

I think I will not worry about it. I will stick with techni glue for now. As I said it was a question.

I would say Techniglue would be a better all round glue. The Titebond is not an epoxy as far as I know and not usable in the function of laminating glass composite bows. It has it's place though. Steve

JMC AMSO 128 stocks smooth on, and in my humble opinion best bow making glue in the world.

so Titebond III would still be ok for a laminated wood bow (not glass)?

Yes, plenty seem to be using it for wood to wood bonding in bows. I would still use an epoxy myself. Steve

Hi All. I've done a ring around and the only place I've found locally (Brisbane) that stocks any of the above mentioned glues is Carbatech. Seems they don't carry Smooth-On. I've found Rowe Trading down south who seem to be the Australian distributor for Smooth On and have contacted them but no response to date. If anyone knows of a Brisbane seller I'd appreciate the information.

Thanks, Indie.
