First try at Cresting Carbons...

#1 Post by g_r » Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:39 am

Hi there,

First, sorry for being not here often in the last few months, just too much duties and work. Apart from my normal training i couldnt do many bow related projects lately.
One of those was trying cresting for the first time and though they arent perfect i wanted to show them.

Story behing this: A good friend of mine whome i owe a lot wanted to get into Trad archery and for his birthday i gave him a bow. With this bow of course he needed some arrows. Cheap old Powerflights amde up to his specs. 6 of em plain for first amunition but the other 6 i wanted to make a bit more special.

Well, cresting jig was a powerdrill and a coke bottle with a hole in the cap. A Scale and a more sturdy jig will definately make it easier to have excact and identical crestings.

Heres my free handed version  :

I dont have a scale, heres a desription of my "Redneck-setup":
I put the tipend of the shaft into a powerdrill and lie it flat on the workbench. at the nock end is a coke bottle with a shaft sized hole in the cap, ducttaped to the table. after inserting the nock end into the hole i manage the powerdrill with one hand while holding the brush with the other hand. The palm of the brush-hand i press slightly against the shaft to make it a bit more sturdy.
I can make you a pic of it tomorrow, but it looks like some modern trash-art

Thanks all.

8) A very nice looking bunch of arrows there.
:surprised: By the way you have described your set up, in holding the shafts and applying the paint, to do the cresting, I believe you should be very proud of your efforts. Well done...........bill

I got the idea G-r sort of using the coke bottle as a bush or bearing. You have done a great job with pretty ordinary set up. Great.
