Where to get Bamboo?

#1 Post by Buckler » Fri Jul 13, 2012 5:08 pm

Hey folks

I have had a go at making a bow, and failed. :) But enjoyed it. (Will get pictures up soon)

I am wondering where to get Bamboo floor boards in Sydney. I have seen that you guys have used them to make bows.

I went to Carpet court and they had flooring but it was, well, not what I expected. I have seen bamboo flooring which you can see the grain in, and the regular bits of tight grain that is classic in bamboo. THis stuff was all motley looking and the lady said it was shredded bamboo that then gets glued and pressed.
What should I be looking for and does anyone know where to look?

Cheers

+Simon

Simon,

What style of bow are you trying to make ie; all bamboo, a bamboo backed board or a bamboo core between glass?

I beleive the second two. Id like to back aussie timbers with Iron bark firstly. but id also like to try laminating some time. After looking again at a laminated bamboo build along I think he may have used the bamboo that I have looked at which is the fiber stuff that they glue and compress together.
So I guess to answere your question id like one type to do both jobs.

Does this shreded glued together stuff work or does everyone use that stuff that you can see the grain and the 'nodes' in?

You can get vertical laminated bamboo floorboards at bunnings. Cutting these up into lams can be hard work and waste a lot of material.

I got around this by using 3mm bamboo panels such as http://houseofbamboo01.businesscatalyst ... boo-panels

Nice one Rich 8) .

The 3 mm vertical boo wall panels would reduce the tooling and time in making a laminated bow for sure. The carbonised finish is very dark (looks nice), I wonder if it effects epoxy bond strength. Have you given it a "stress" test? Thanks for the link.

Cheers......... Rod

Hi Rod,

I made up a 50# straight longbow about 5 years back using the panelling and techniglue as the epoxy. It's still going strong. It wasn't the carbonised stuff but I know that when making bamboo flyrods, a work still in progress, the carbonisation is only a cosmetic choice. I can't see it being any different.

Sincerely,

Rich.

Bamboo panelling? Who could dream such a magical product could exist?

Apart from that house of bamboo place, where else might someone find such a product?

So I've tried without much luck to find some thin vertical bamboo panelling in Melbourne or Canberra, without much luck. Anyone know of a vendor in either of these cities?

The paneling is called Lamelle but you may have trouble finding it other than Bamboo Oz. Perhaps give them a ring for a vendor near you. The flooring is the same but larger dimension. What are you thinking of using it for? Steve

I was hoping to save time in ripping boards down for laminations. Not for backings. Maybe for belly, but mostly for middle lams.

Lamelle. I will try looking for that.

Cheers!
