A bit excited...

#1 Post by kimall » Tue Oct 25, 2011 10:19 pm

I got a wall knocked out at home here a couple of weeks ago and the builder put a LVL beam in its place(like giant ply) and he had a couple of meters left over so what can you do with a piece of wood 60mm thick by 2 mtrs long?
Thats right a new bow form right there so I spent the last 2 days marking out and cutting the new air hose form I have wanted to make for a while.I am real happy with the D/R longbows I make so am now going to make some all wood compisit bows with bamboo backing.I have a place to cut the boo so will get there in the next few weeks but until then I will glue one up using glass to see if I like the shape of the finished bow.It will conform with the longbow rules regarding the gap from string to limb I hope I if I got it all right today and will have a much smaller straighter riser than the Defiants I make.Even bought new glue today so after the hospital tomorrow I will glue up a riser and cut some limb lams.
I will put some pics up tomorrow..
Woo hoo I love being in the shed..Cheers KIM

The riser is purple heart and rockmaple with a bit of zebra wood

Like the look of the riser. Is purple heart a difficult wood to glue? Some where I seem to recall it being oily or something.

Terry this was another smaller bit I had saving the big one. 8)
Bob I have not found it oily but it is very hard so wears cutting tools very fast.Sometimes it turns out a ugly grey when cut and sometimes a bright purple a bit hit and miss.

Looking real good Kim. Cant think of a better use for a bit of building material waste . I really like your riser and overall shape, very organic. Does the belly glass goes over the riser in one piece? Glad to see you are able to fill your time so usefully while your under treatment and cant go to work. Looking forward to some more pics mate.

Cheers........ Rod

I knew you could not be trusted Chris and for the record I Firmly Believe that sawdust was in the machine when they gave it to me and that is why it did not work prop. 8) Off to pull the bow out of the form now after my morning coffee so some pics to come soon(If the glue lines are ok).

Another..
I would not normaly shape the riser yet until it had been tillered but as it only came off the form this morning I dont want to bend it for a few days.As we need something to do we went onto cutting string grooves and shaping the handle. The gluelines are not to bad and the limbs have no woops or kinks so I am very happy with the form.
