Lets make some shafts..

#1 Post by kimall » Sat Jun 25, 2011 4:27 pm

I finished a dowel making jig last w/end but could not try it until today so I made some arrows to go with Zac's new bow he picked up today.I have taken a few pics along the way to make it clearer but if you have any questions just ask.
Cheers KIM.
I started with a old piece of hoop pine floor board and sliced it up on the bandsaw into about 10mm square stock.
Image
I then put a small spigot on one end of each stick by putting it in the jig and turning it by hand and then cleaning them up on the linisher. This is so they can go in the drill chuck for the next step.
Image
Then just feed them through the jig with the router going flat out with a straight bit in it and watch out for the saw dust as it really flys.
Image
Image
Then I put them through my tapering jig which I have shown before to get them nice a smooth ans all the same size.

Nice work Kim, Question though, on where the shaft feeds through the first part of the Jig, Is it a larget hole or is there anything to round the shaft off first.?

I like the simplicity of the Jig, It probably packs up quite neatly. In my case I have by far too much Crap in the Garage and am always looking at ways to make it smaller and easier to store. I like these Build alongs I get b far more out of them than even doing myself.

I can go along with Kim on this one. When it comes to carbons if you make a mistake you know it was your fault, but with wood you cant be sure where the fault lies. I have made up a good set quite carefully and it just cant stand up to a carbon.

Yeah Rod he possibly will but I don't think he won't admit it.

Good job Kim; the Hoop Pine makes a nice shaft but they are a bit light for my tastes.

Nice job Kim, maybe you can offer some for sale here! 8)

Are you able to make different diameters with this jig, or do you need a separate one for each size?

As long as you start with the same size square you can move the jig to make different sized shafts.I have a mate with a metal lathe and I was thinking I might get him to make a couple of sleeve type inserts you could put in the holes so you could use smaller squares to start with to save some wood. Jeff I use hoop for my own shafts and get about 10 grain per pound with the finished arrows which is the exact weight I like for all my arrows.Using this type of jig and the taper type jig they seem to come out very straight too with little work needed to make them spot on.Hoop pine is HEAPS stronger than the POC we get now days in my experience hitting trees. :?
Cheers KIM
Make to sell you must be kidding the reason I made a quicker way of making woods is my son is now shooting a bow too so now I have twice as many arrows to keep replacing. I only like the painting bit. :D

Kim,

That is a good weight, it may be because of the old wood which would most likely have come from old trees. The hoop shafts I have seen and used were light but as you say, stronger than POC shafts.

:) The set up is great, but I place a 3/8" bolt with a 1/2" head in my drill and place a socket over the head of the bolt and use the 1/2" square drive on the ends of the square billets. This is then how I spin and feed the billets into my router that is simular in set up, with a large feed hole two guide holes and a third that is a little bit smaller that burnishes the shaft on its exit. Lots of fun on the rain filled days..........Bill

HI Kimall, nice set up Im curious however on your tapering jig
Then I put them through my tapering jig which I have shown before to get them nice a smooth ans all the same size.
I did a search and could not find info on this jig.
I have been fooling around in the shed with one myself. Have moved from basic sandpaper to a two file and vacumed system. But I need to work out a way of being able to adjust the angles(rather than just screwing the RA down) as I need to achieve various tapers. I have some ideas but just wondered what you came up with.
"I am the arrow..the arrow is me...together as one...I fly to thee"
"the stick maybe crooked and the string hath no form,
then married by bowyer, transforms when first drawn"
"twang....thud"

G'day Kimall, not telling you how how to do your work or anything like that but if those clamps let go while your routing all hell will break loose, had bits of flying router bits, not fun

a few years ago i made up a simple box for a trimmer router with a guide fence, with a hole in the top for the bit to come through, kind of like a table router you just mount the router inverted inside, and you can even attach a vaccum set up to it to remove dust

always fun making things for yourself hey :D
