Bit of a build along

#1 Post by bigbob » Sun Jul 08, 2012 3:02 pm

Been taking a few photos as I did this latest bow so I thought someone may want to have a bit of a squint at the process.Decided to get a bit adventurous with this and try something a little new to me as in spliced lams.I didnt really have a target weight on this one as it will just be for me. Reckon somewhere between 45# and 50# will be the bees knees. Second shot is just taking the tongue of the 'boo flooring, followed by ripping the boards to width.

Shot of the lams cut to width and also ripping each lam edge wise to create 3 lams per section.First shot shows my home made fence for the bandsaw which works great.

Next couple shots show the osage belly lams that I ripped out of a plank, one has a diamond shaped inset to go in, and they will have spliced tips of zebrano.

Ok got a bit more done , cut the pieces for the riser and whacked them in the hotbox, for a couple hours and set to work on the band saw and drum sander. Its Osage and Wenge [hate it] with natural bamboo accents.

Out of the hotbox and started shaping. Fades are partly finished. They need to be so fine at the ends you can see light through them.

This isn't your first mate and it won't be your last, I have full faith even more because it is not your first

Yeah Dan it sands easily and works very well but is very porous and the grain lifts out as you sand. It has to be filled with grain filler, but the end result usually justifies the time. Thanks guys, will get some more done today hopefully.

Okay got the lay up ready for gluing so here's the shots.Laid out in order . It is very important to lay things out just as they go on the form. All lams are placed in box for 15 mins or so to dry any moisture and make them more suitable for the gluing process. The form has a layer of cling wrap placed on it before the lams to preclude gluing the whole shebang to the form. Air hose in foreground, in front of form. Forgot to mention it is very important to ensure the lam surfaces are cleaned thoroughly with a clean rag and metho.

The last 2 bows dum dum has forgot to add cling wrap on the lay up once its on the form, placing it over the pressure strips instead of under , hence I need new pressure strips [again] I write out a procedure each time because glue ups are not care free and so I can follow it to the letter then promptly forget to read it. Gunna have some fun I think getting the strips off.Oh well got a couple spares anyway.

Gidday Bob,

I made a bloody big poster with all the steps on it to hang up near my workbench. And still, last time I didn't put the heat resistant masking tape on the outside of the glass  . It cost me a lot of time cleaning up   I think us newbies are just prone to getting over excited mate, time and practice will sort that out..... I hope.

Good build along BTW Bob, I like your sliced lams. I am about to have my first go at something like that, thanks for the inspiration mate.

Cheers....... Rod

Wouldnt matter how many I've made Rod, I'll still find a way to short circuit the process. This is the part I hate now waiting for the cook, to see what you've got. The splices as I've done here are dead easy, some I've got planned are far more adventurous, and will require me obtaining a scroll saw. The inlays are a bit more finnicky but look great, at least I think so.

Ok . finally lifted the hotbox to see what I've got and amongst the glue dags there there just might be a bow.I was right about the pressure strips, but after a short hand to hand, all in brawl, I over powered the rotten things and got started.

Now for the clean up and cutting to size. I use a 4'' grinder fitted with one of those very thin cut off blades, and after a bit of practice can go to within 1mm of the line. However one slip and disaster looms. I then even it out with the same grinder fitted with rubber pad and 36 grit emery. The lines are marked out on the tape after centering with string line.

the dust protection is vital. I dont have dust extraction installed as we are hoping to move, and with the very dangerous nature of 'glass and bamboo particles one cant take chances.

Cant wait to see the pics with the tape off Bob, nice work and thanks for posting.

If you are gunna keep doing this mate, you could make a template from one of your spare pressure strips. It makes marking out so quick and easy, even on a DR blank.

Cheers....... Rod

Na rod gunna keep making them of course but because I change the length depending on poundage and draw length it is quick and easy just to lay it out, only takes couple minutes. Thanks for the thought though.

cut some rough nocks and strung it to find tiller.By the way its not as rough as it might look; that is just the tape edges making it look like it was bitten into shape by a large dog.

Next up is making the nock overlays and on this one I am putting an overlay at the riser for no other reason but that I felt like it.This shows the riser overlay in white phenolic and osage, and the nocks from red, white phenolic and Wenge.

It is quite important that all glue surfaces be scuffed with 40 grit to enable good gluing surface.Drum sander very good for this
