OK so we have our arras and we go and harvest an animal
next thing how do we go about tanning the skins
i have a recipe for tanning with wattle as follows
get a heap of black wattle bark and cut it into squares about 1cm
boil it in water and keep the water off the bark
boil the bark again in a fresh batch of water
drain once again and keep this lot of water as well
after the water has cooled soak the hide to be tanned in the 2nd batch of water for 1 week
each night remove the hide and scrape the flesh side
after 1 week remove the hide and soak it in the 1st batch of water for another week
at the end of the week the hide is tanned
i haven't tried it as yet but plan to very soon
does anyone have any other recipes????
i am very interested in trying a number of different ways
all the best

Stand by Erron, this might be another section for Lore & Legends.
I might have a Tanning receipe in a back issue of our TBBC mag. Will try and find it.

Another great thread by the MIK!
And yes Richard, I think it will be a good one to keep too!

Mik, with the demise
of Leidreiters tanning kits it become a natural alternative time as with the wattle bark method. I do believe there is a new tanning kit on the market, selling for approx $45. Happened to see one at the local gun store recently. I have a heap of skins salted away ready for tanning, so will soon invest in one & give it a try.

Be sure to let us know how it works out, and the details of its availability, Dave!

I was given a receipe for tanning skins, it is the same receipe as the taxidermist use to tan their skins and you can buy all of the ingredients fron the supermarket, I will have a look and see if I can find it...Glenn...
