Feather Burner

#1 Post by MIK » Sun Jan 11, 2004 8:03 pm

howdy doody one and all

i am interested in making a feather burner so that i can shape the feathers once they are fletched on the shaft

does anyone have a plan for one per chance???

does anyone know what temperature you need to achieve in order to burn a feather???

i was thinking of using an old scaletrix 12 volt transformer with some wire ... cant remember the type of wire but the local tandy guy pointed me in that direction

looking forward to your responses

thanks

MIK,

I have seen piano wire used with the transformer. Also the link below should take you to an article from an old Traditional Bowhunter Mag on how to make a burner.

http://www.bambooarrow.com/burner.html

Hope this helps and let us know how you go. Jeff

Feather burner

Try a 24 volt 15 amp transformer and nichrome wire. Burning feathers will really stink, recomend you dont do it on the kitchen table.

Feather Burner

Mik,
If you would like to send me a stamped self addressed envelope of business size I'll send you some nichrome element wire. We used to use this stuff at work, but no longer use it. there is a spool sitting on the store shelf, and its only gathering dust. The boss wont miss 500 mm.

if you don't mind putting up the "bucks", 3 rivers sells one named the young feather burner and it comes with what they call "ribbons" of wire to shape how u wish ...

heck, i've used coat hangers heated over a propane burner to burn feathers ...

have fun ...
when in doubt, run in circles and scream and shout ...

its not the dollars for buying one ... and it may even come to that

since getting into trad stuff i take great pride in making all the bits and pieces that i am using to make arrows and so forth so i would like to make a feather burner to make some different shaped feathers fo fun

when i get around to it i will post some pickies of the bits that i have made in the albums section if anyone is interested in seeing what a layman can achieve :-)

thanks for all the help
