Some finished footed arrows...

#1 Post by Al Kidner » Wed Feb 25, 2009 3:42 pm

G'day all,

Well I ended up finishing off these footed shafts I had in "War Stocks" for a close mate of mine, Mark Kimber. I did not foot these shafts I've had them for a while, but I do foot my own now when ever I get the chance. I did put the twist in 'em and the rest of the work though. I just hope they shoot as good as they look.

Seeing Mark would just have to be the leading bowyer here in Oz, I thought he'd better start shooting some fine looking arrows at Traditional shoots about the place.

He has not seen 'em yet so I'd like to see his face when he gets home from the post office 8) .

They're something else, Al!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

Stunning work. I'd never shoot them, too scared to hurt them!

As you all know ,, I aint into "pretty arrows" , BUT ,, I do like the footings and tips , I like the way they match up and love the grain in the footings :D
Well done AL . Now pick yourself up from the floor after reading my reply
I promise I wont say that again
What wood are the footings made of ?

Thanks for all the kind words fellas... and Coach, the footings are Wenge and the main shafting is Sitka Spruce. As for he points, I think I got 'em from 3Rivers or maybe here in Oz, not sure, I've had 'em a while.

Beautiful that they are. Fine work, fit for robin Hoods showroom.

Those are amazing. How do you cut a twisted footing???

if they shoot as well as they look, then they'd be the best shooting arrows I've ever laid eyes on :D

not that i have tryed it but i guess you would foot them as normal befor reducing the footing, steam them and add the twist befor finishing. am i close??

cheers

That's right, heat is use to trwist the footings once they are glued to the shaft. The are just a normal footing to start with, you can leave the twisting to almost the last process of finishing. If you place the end of the shaft in a drill and use sandpaper to reduce the footings down to the shaft size the heat generated from the sandpaper is enought to twist the footings...Glenn...
