G'day Flyne,

The answer will depend on who you are ordering your strings from. I see Coach says to give him your string length which makes it pretty easy. Others may want the bow measured along the back of the bow between the string nocks etc. It would be best to talk to whoever you are ordering your strings from and ask them the measurement they need.

if you measure along the back of the bow from one string groove to the other and take three inches from that measurement is that right Jeff :?:

Generally a rough rule of thumb 4" for recurves and 3" for longbows shorter than the bows overall ntn length

Below is the the AMO standard.

AMO CONVENTIONAL BOW LENGTH STANDARD: AMO Bow Length Standard is designated to be three inches longer than AMO Bow String Master that braces bow at proper String or Brace Height. Bow String Master will carry only the bow length designation. Example: A Bow String Master designated as AMO 66” (bow length) will have an actual length under tension of 63”.

The problem is not all bow makers mark the AMO length on their bows.

If I were you I would measure along the back of the bow between the string nocks and have a Flemish Twist string made 3.5" shorter than your bow. This will allow you to twist or untwist the string a little to get the right brace height and then once you have established that, measure the string so you can order that length next time.
