what becomes of the broken shafted?

Where to source materials etc. Also the place to show off your new bow or quiver etc.... Making things belongs in Traditional Crafts.

what becomes of the broken shafted?

#1 Post by Buford » Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:12 am

hi all,
am having a little trouble with the tips of my shafts breaking when i miss (quite often!). and no, not that shaft before anyone says it! :D
i'm using p o cedar shafts to keep the weight down(around 550 grains made up) because i shoot mainly 3d and the like, don't do any hunting so i would like to avoid the heavy weight shafts i commonly hear about on these pages.
i was just wondering if anyone knows of a fairly robust shaft material to help solve this problem before i go to the extra expense of footed shafts?
thankx
matt

ps i know i could practice more and not miss but i'm a lazy bastard! :D

Hey Buford
Check out
http://WWW.STICKBOW.COM/FEATURES/ARROWMAKING/wood.cfm

Not sure what's available from who here down under but it sure is a good resource! the other pages in that section are good stuff too.

Footing your own isn't that tough, especially if you just do a 2 winged foot. Try this for instructions: http://users.rcn.com/gtsouk/footed.html

cletus,
have checked out the link you put in, looks like those chundoo shafts are gaining in popularity. you can get them from whitings yes?

tuffcity,
thanks for the suggestion, but alas time is the worst enemy of the night shift worker. and to make matters worse, i have a second day job. if i ever get a bit of spare i will definitely give it a go though.

thanks erron :) i get alot of time to think while i'm workin' nights. and that title only took 6 or 7 hours to come up with!!

Shut up lindsay! you know my brain don't work so good or fast on 6 hours sleep!

cheers all

Hey Matt,
Whitings are the go for the Chundoo's at around 2.10 to 2.20 per shaft I think I recall.

I haven't done a lot of shooting with mine yet so as far as a long term "trial" is conerned I cannot really comment. Give em a go anyways, you can only see what suits you.

finally got around to gettin the new shafts just before xmas. couldn't get any chundoo's from whitings, they were out of em and all indications point to maybe not being able to get them again?

so i just got poc's again this time in a thicker diameter.

i only got one question, i asked for 50 lbs spine shafts and they came uncut (about 31 - 32 in) and untapered as per usual. so when i cut them down to 28 inch, is that going to stiffen the spine?

cheers

Your shafts should have been spined on either the 28 or the 26 inch mark (seems to depend on the "authority" that the spiner follows). If I remember correctly every inch over 28(?) subtracts about 5 lbs of spine from the shaft. ie: the shafts you ordered would be in the neighbourhood of 35# at 31 inches. Factor in non dacron string (dyna 97, FF), another 5#+ to add to spine requirement.

So, you should be ok. :D

Broken Shafts

#13 Post by woody » Sun Dec 28, 2003 1:07 am

At the risk of being a heritic, I will suggest carbon arrows. Their recovery from achers paradox, light weight and strength make them very efficient out of traditional bows. Gold Tip make one with a wood grain pattern, which is supposedly failrly realistic looking. Carbon Tech Rhino shafts are about 11/32 diametre and 11.5 grains per inch.
They wont smell like POC but.

Woody
Ah but ol' Buford wouldn't be able to compete at 3DAAA shoots in the Traditional class with carbon arrows - follows similar rules to IBO.

i don't know if you folks "Down under" have it or not but there's a product named 'MINWAX' wood hardener. it's similar to a 'liquid plastic'. it was developed to stop the decaying of wood.

i soak the tip end of POC shaft in it for 20 minutes and let it air dry. it seems to work well and it's not as difficult as 'footing' an aero. i have a half dozens shafts i did with it a while back (as a 'test') and they're holding up well. no broken ones yet...

good luck ...

ps. the cresting method i mentioned in one of the other topics of using the wire and serving was not used on these, just incase you noticed the lines arn't very narrow.

Top job Buford :!:

Nothin like a set of dressed up woodies hey? I like your choice of shield cut feathers as well. Not saying they're better than other types but they just look better IMO.
